U3A - Central Hawke’s Bay

U3A - Central Hawke’s Bay We are a group of retired and semi-retired community members who meet regularly to share knowledge and interests and continue to learn about new things.

We do this in supportive and fun ways recognising that we can all make positive contributions. U3ACHB is part of a wider international movement established in France in 1972 by Professor Pierre Vellas. He wanted to offer courses open to older people and he found the rules in France would not allow it. A change in legislation was needed to establish ‘l’universite du trosieme age’ - the university o

f the third age

The acronym U3A reflects the idea that following childhood and working/family years our post work or retirement years become ‘the third age’

From France the idea spread to Britain and widened in concept to include groups that could organise themselves to draw on and share their expertise. The movement spread to Australia in 1984 and then onto New Zealand in 1989. There are a number of groups established throughout New Zealand including the wider Hawkes Bay region. The Central Hawkes Bay U3A group was established in 2010 by Mary Knight and Vivienne Ellis.
