Mauri Oho

Mauri Oho Hononga Taiao ~ Huinga Mauri Ora! By connection with nature, all life is rejuvenated! Its goal is to protect and revitalise the ecology of the area.

Mauri Oho is made possible by funding from the Mahi Mō Te Taiao (Jobs for Nature) Programme. Mauri Oho is a landscape-scale trapping and riparian-recovery project in the Northern Ruahine Range and adjacent land in the Kererū district. It will nurture the revival of taonga species such as kiwi and whio, reverse degradation in numerous areas of major environmental significance and will lay down a we

lcome mat to enable a thriving manu population to expand from the mountains into neighbouring populated areas. It will achieve a key step towards the vision of people living in harmony with nature in an environment with clean waterways, a rich ecology and flourishing wildlife.

Between May and June, over 20 acoustic recorders were strategically deployed across Ōhutu Ridge, Ruahine Corner, Ironbark Hut, and Colenso Hut to capture kiwi calls and support ongoing population monitoring efforts.

This mahi is a vital step toward enabling the release of more kiwi into Ruahine National Park.

It’s a privilege for Mauri Oho to be a part of this ongoing project along side , members from Ngai Te Ohuake hapu, DOC, Ruahine Whio protectors, volunteers and the NZ Airforce.

In early May, we took part in the trap deployment on the Mōkai Pātea range to help further expand the trapping network on Ruahine. Over 2 days, 12 keen trappers deployed, set and waypointed over 60 traps on the top of the Mokai Range, down to Wakelings hut and down to Crow Hut. This mahi will help protect native bird populations such as kiwi and whio by eliminating introduced pest species.

We would like to take the opportunity to give thanks to the people of Mōkai Pātea for letting us be apart of this kaupapa and to all the support we received from our whanau from Te Ngahere and DOC.

On the 10th of March 2025, Andy Glaser, his dog Max and Mauri Oho representative - Lisa Whittle, visited two catchments over three days in the Apias and Ikawatea streams to take part in the 2025 Whio Survey, check and recovery post cyclone Gabrielle.

With the help of Max the Whio dog, a total of 27 birds were spotted and recorded. This is the third survey Mauri Oho has been apart of and we look forward to many more.

According to reports from Andy, Max the dog took (a well deserved) three days to recover on the couch. 🐕‍🦺

Alligator w**d is one of the worlds most invasive w**d species as it can survive on both land and water. It rapidly forms dense mats with roots that can grow up to two meters in depth. Although it doesn’t seed in Aotearoa, it only needs a small node fragment to sprout a new plant. It is also toxic to stock.

The Mauri Oho team is currently undertaking w**d control at Whatumā Recreational Reserve in support of Regional Councils goal to eliminate this w**d and prevent wider spread into the Tukituki catchment.
