Toastmasters Cambridge NZ- a supportive atmosphere for learning public speaking. Mondays 7-9pm, Wa You are in the right place!

Nervous about speaking in public but would like to overcome this? We warmly invite visitors to come along to a club night (Monday, 7.15-9pm, Cambridge Council Buildling, 22 Wilson Street, Cambridge PH Nic - 027 2010300) to find out what the club is about and how they can be involved. Cambridge Toastmasters provides a supportive and friendly atmosphere where people learn to speak well in

public - and gain the confidence to do so! Members learn a range of skills to gain confidence and experience at speaking in public, including learning about voice modulation, body language and speech structure. They also learn to give and receive effective evaluations. The evening is run by a 'toastmaster' (member of the club who fills that role for the evening) who organises a programme with two or three speeches (given by club members). Members fill a variety of roles ranging from the running impromptu speeches to evaluations. At the end of each meeting the general evaluator will sum up the evening. You will find the Toastmasters experience beneficial for professional development and personal confidence.

Monday 8th June. We had our usual hybrid meeting tonight. We're having two of them a month now to keep costs down. The other two meetings will be on Zoom only.

The theme was "The Power of Gratitude" and the word of the night was "Attention."

We had two speeches, from Justin on his footballing career, from his start as a schoolboy, and from Julie on banned books. She had samples of books which had once been banned, like Lady Chatterley's Lover.
Both were good speeches and Julie's was something of an eye-opener.

Paul gave us some very good questions in Table Topics, centred on history, mostly recent, ie 20th century. Table Topics is always good fun.

All in all, an excellent meeting, as usual. The Raceway's room is a good venue though it's getting a bit small since we get visitors who like us and join up.

A quick update: at our committee meeting last night, we decided to defer our open meeting until the 15th of this month. The venue is still the Cambridge Raceway.

Just a couple of photos from a recent meeting.

We're having an open meeting next Monday, 15th June, and we're a hybrid club so guests can use Zoom if they want to try us out before joining. The physical venue is at the Cambridge Raceway and the contact to get the Zoom address is [email protected]

There's plenty of parking at the Raceway of course, and guests are always welcome, whether in person or on Zoom.

Our meeting tonight, Monday 18th May, was good fun as usual. We had only one speech, a crackerjack from Paul which went down really well.

Table Topics were based on the theme of getting out of our comfort zones, and our 2 guests bravely took a Topic. They aquitted themselves well.

We had our Annual Business Meeting tonight, and all members voted to approve the substantial increase in club dues caused by the cancellation of our nice cheap Council room and by the weakness of the NZ dollar against the US. Toastmaster International's 60 USD fee becomes over 100 NZD, and that's every 6 months. $200 a year, plus local costs, principally room hire.

Our search for a new venue continues. At present we're alternating between real meetings at the Cambridge Raceway committee room and virtual meetings on Zoom.

Last Monday, we had a pleasure to welcome some special guests to our meeting. One of them was Laura Knight coming all the way from Pompano Beach Toastmasters. Their club also meets at 7pm on Mondays, same as us - sounds like a sister club connection 😊

We are between venues at the moment but this hasn’t stopped us enjoying our weekly get-togethers to practise giving speeches and feedback to our members. Happy New Year from us all at Toastmasters Treetown Cambridge club…we are resuming our meetings this coming Monday, 12 January at 7pm after the holiday break. Have you made any NY resolutions? Perhaps improving self confidence at public speaking is one of them….or maybe you have a big event coming up in 2026…a wedding or birthday speech? We had our final meeting of 2025 on Monday. Our theme was “Traditions”…it’s that time of year! We were each able to reflect on worldly traditions, family customs and to speculate on new ones we’d like to introduce given the chance!

We now have a break until 12 January so if one of your new year resolutions is going to be about improving your self confidence and speaking skills, why not come along and see what we do…in person or zoom. PM for more details
