It started as a normal day at home for Marty, his wife Resh and their two sons. But when Marty began feeling dizzy and went to lie down, everything changed quickly.

When Resh checked on him, she found him unresponsive and making an unusual snoring sound. As an ED nurse, she knew what to do. Calling for her sons, she started CPR and asked one of them to call 111, while a neighbour came over to help with CPR until fire and ambulance crews arrived.

After receiving multiple shocks from a defibrillator, Marty regained a weak pulse and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Two weeks later, he was home with his family 💛

Doctors told the family that early CPR helped save Marty’s life. Now, Marty hopes his story will encourage others to learn CPR too.

Meet Ben, a critical care paramedic and the vice-captain of the NZ 50's Touch Rugby team 🫡

Ben has been with us for over 20 years, providing care in his community in the Bay of Plenty region. At the same time, he has been representing the region and New Zealand in touch rugby 🏉

He's helped his teams achieve both silvers and golds throughout his touch career, including winning gold in the Touch World Cup in 2019.

Having just arrived in Japan for the Asia Pacific Seniors Touch Cup, Ben continues to be a vital part of the team, now as vice-captain. Ben says touch is a great game for fitness, and thinking under exertion and pressure. At the top level it is like trying to play chess while running as fast as you can ♟️

Let's go, Ben! Here's to another victory! 🥇

When Elle joined St John Youth NZ she never imagined that 26 years later she’d be back volunteering with us as part of Christchurch’s Major Incident Support Team (MIST) 💛

Today, Elle looks after welfare within Christchurch MIST, making sure our people are supported, while they support others.

That care is a big part of the team. Christchurch MIST brings together people from all walks of life, from firefighters and electricians to nurses and IT specialists. Together, they support ambulance crews with logistics, communications and welfare, at everything from major incidents and severe weather to concerts and sporting events.

Each fortnight they come together to learn and practice. It might be setting up their 7.5-metre inflatable tent, training alongside other agencies, or getting to know the places they may one day be called to.

For Elle, it’s about being part of a group who show up for each other and their community.

And they’re looking for new volunteers from across the community🤝 Find out more in the comments ⬇️

Hands-on simulations are a key part of training for our critical care paramedic interns.

Critical care paramedics respond to the most complex of incidents, and provide advanced care to patients in the most life-threatening conditions 🩺

This particular day had our interns focusing on cardiovascular simulations, including practicing suctioning skills for airway management.

Rigorous training prepares our frontline staff to deliver expert clinical care with focus, compassion and determination at every callout ✅✅✅
