This month is all about prevention!
From locking up every time you head out, to removing hazards around the home; there are numerous ways we can make our homes and communities safer, more secure places to live.

To help tackle some of the most common issues our streets and communities face, for the month of April we will be focusing on prevention advice and tips for improving household and
neighbourhood safety. Taking part could be as simple as replacing the batteries in your smoke alarms, engraving tools with your name and number, establishing a safe meeting place and escape plan for your household in case of a fire, or even helping a neighbour trim back their hedges.

Have some tips or ideas you want to share? Let us know how you’re creating safer communities this month by tagging us in your social media posts or emailing us your photos, videos, or experiences to

Massive Ngā mihi nui to all our awesome volunteers over the years who have helped support the growth of Neighbourhood Support North Shore!!, we appreciate you!

INTERNATIONAL MICROVOLUNTEERING DAY
Not everyone has the time to volunteer regularly, or perform large acts of service. But microvolunteering allows you to give back anyway, in smaller ways 😊
For anyone who might be feeling the urge to do something worthwhile, or an itch to give back to the community – but who just can’t seem to get around to starting, then International Microvolunteering Day could be the answer!
Sometimes even small gestures can have a profound impact – so give it a go!

Here’s a few ideas to get you started:
*Offer your tech or creative skills to a local community group
*Help a local conservation group with some weeding or planting
*Get crafty – and knit, crochet, or sew items for local charities
*Arrange, or help with, a beach cleanup
*Pick up some rubbish while you’re out on a walk
*Take donated items to a local food pantry
*Teach some new computer or phone skills to an older person
*Donate good quality items to local charity shops
*Spend time with someone who may be isolated or lonely – or take them on an outing
*Donate some yummy baking to a local fundraiser

If a bit of microvolunteering inspires you to try something more – check out the huge array of volunteering opportunities on the Volunteering Auckland website. https://volunteeringauckland.org.nz/individuals/opportunities

For those that wish to support the family further, here is the Give a Little Page link organised by the Browns Bay Business Association 💜
https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/tragic-family-event-at-neco-sushi

With the blessing of her family, we are pleased to let you know that Neco Sushi owner, Marie, has been moved out of Intensive Care. Due to the seriousness of her injuries, she still has a long way ahead of her to full recovery.

Marie and her sons wish to reiterate their thanks to everyone in the community who helped her on the day of the incident. They also wish to thank many more people who have since reached out to them to offer their support and prayer. They described it as “overwhelming”, and said they wished they knew all those wonderful people to thank in person.

Neco Sushi will remain closed until the family is better placed to make decisions about the way forward. We have no doubt that the community will continue to support them on Marie’s journey back to health, and when the business re-opens.

It’s important to have your say on the Fire Plan for your area! 🔥

A Fire Plan outlines how and why we use our fire control powers to manage the risks of fire in a particular area.

For example, each Fire Plan outlines what things Fire and Emergency NZ will consider when deciding to change to prohibited or restricted fire seasons, or prohibited activities which can be high risk of causing a wildfire.

Consultation closes 14 March 2024 at 5pm. To have your say go to: https://fireandemergency.nz/about-us/public-consultation/2024-fire-plans-consultation/
