With consultation between EMS and MetService we have decided to upgrade the warning for Coastal parts of Clutha and Southland, also Stewart Island to a RED Wind Warning. See below for details:

⚠️Situation
*Updated at midday to upgrade coastal Southland and Clutha to a RED Wind Warning.* An active front, associated with a significant deep low to the south, moves over southern and central New Zealand on Thursday. Significant impacts are expected, and there is a possibility that more Orange Warnings may be upgraded to Red Warnings. Please stay up to date with forecasts.

🟠Strong Wind Warning - Orange
Area: Fiordland
Period: 3hrs from 9:00am Thu to 12:00pm Thu
Forecast: Severe gale northwesterlies gusting 120 km/h in exposed places.
Minimal chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.
Impact: Damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures possible. Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
Action: Prepare your property by securing items that can be picked up by strong winds. Drive cautiously.

🔴Strong Wind Warning - Red
Area: Coastal parts of Clutha and Southland, also Stewart Island
Period: 7hrs from 9:00am Thu to 4:00pm Thu
Forecast: Severe gale northwesterlies gusting 120 km/h in exposed places, changing around midday Thursday to severe gale west to southwesterlies with damaging gusts of 150 km/h in exposed places.
Impact: Threat to life from flying items and falling trees. Destructive winds will cause widespread damage including powerlines and roofs, with dangerous driving conditions and significant disruption to transport and power supply.
Action: Stay indoors or seek sturdy shelter away from trees. Avoid travel. Be ready for power and communication outages.

🟠Strong Wind Warning - Orange
Area: Dunedin and inland parts of Clutha and Southland
Period: 7hrs from 9:00am Thu to 4:00pm Thu
Forecast: Severe gale northwesterlies gusting 120 km/h in exposed places, changing around midday Thursday to severe gale west to southwesterlies with damaging gusts of 130 km/h in exposed places.
Low chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.
Impact: Damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures possible. Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

Yes it's rather calm right now, but we are expecting that to change! The wind will switch from a north-westerly to south-westerly around midday, with damaging gusts of 140km/h, especially in exposed coastal places expected.
This means Invercargill, Stewart Island and around to Clutha are likely to feel the brunt of this.
Driving conditions could be dangerous, and there could be damage to trees, powerlines, and roofs.

Join Bailey and Junaya for six weekly sessions, every Wednesday 5pm–7pm, where we’ll explore parenting through a Māori world view, share kōrero, and strengthen our whānau journeys together.

Recently you would have seen our post about Te Pōhā Mātauraka o Murihiku. In October, the team will be hosting a hui at Murihiku Marae for Kāi Tahu whānau. This is an opportunity for Kai Tahu whānau to learn about the rūnaka-lead programme and ask any questions they may have.
The hui will be held at 5:30pm on Tuesday October 14 at the wharekai of Murihiku Marae, 408 Tramway Road,
