There’s something special about seeing young people get their hands in the soil, knowing the trees they plant will benefit generations to come. Recently our team from Selmes Garden Charitable Trust joined students from Marlborough Boys' Collegefor a morning of planting. Check out our story and video of the day https://treesformarlborough.org/news/marlborough-boys-college-planting-day

Enjoying the outdoors and giving back to our community.

Our team was excited to join in with Landcare Trust and the Wairau Nature Network last week to help plant the native trees they had lovingly grown from seed. The planting took place at Thomsons Ford Reserve and marked another milestone in our partnership with Wairau Nature Network to enhance biodiversity in Marlborough.

Want to help restore Marlborough's Biodiversity and provide inclusive employment and opportunities for people with disabilities? Please donate a tree through our website ... win/win! https://treesformarlborough.org/donate

A NEW social enterprise is helping reforest Marlborough, while supporting learning, work and belonging for people with disabilities. “It’s win, win, win”, says Selmes Garden Charitable Trust general manager Nicki Stretch of the Trees for Marlborough project, which is collecting local native seed for propagation and planting around the region, including for several w**e company restoration projects.

Money raised by the enterprise goes back to the trust’s core role of offering opportunities to people with disabilities, with the former garden centre being transformed into a food-growing hub, along with plans for a vegetable store and cafe, “to create a really inspiring place, not only for the people that we’re supporting, but also for the community”, Nicki says.

We are thrilled to partner with Wairau Nature Network to launch their new demonstration site. This space is dedicated to trialling and showcasing innovative planting methods that support our local ecosystem.
Thomsons Ford Reserve is ready for its transformation, and we’d love for you to be part of it. Please consider making a donation to support the site, and then join in with the Wairau Nature Network on Saturday, 6th June for their very first community planting day.

Trees for Marlborough is thrilled to partner with the Wairau Nature Network to create a community-led restoration project bringing native habitats back to life in the Wairau lowlands.

Autumn is Seed Season in Aotearoa

There’s something pretty special about this time of year. As the days cool and the leaves begin to turn, our native plants are quietly doing something amazing — setting seed.

Many native species release their seeds in autumn, meaning they’re mature, viable, and ready to grow the next generation of plants. Cooler temperatures and increased moisture create ideal conditions for seeds to naturally stratify (a fancy word for “getting ready to sprout”). Nature is doing the hard work for us!

At the moment, some of our team are out and about collecting seeds that will become future native plants for reforestation projects across Marlborough — and it’s pretty exciting to think that today’s seeds will become tomorrow’s forests 🌳
