Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Rārua

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Rārua Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Rārua Its journey is one of battle and occupation to forge a new home, and adaptation to survive and thrive in the top of the South Island.

The Ngāti Rārua journey begins with Rāruaioio in the King Country, and weaves its way down Aotearoa to Te Tauihu o te Waka a Māui (the top of the South Island of New Zealand). For over 25 years, the path of Ngāti Rārua has travelled through settlement with the Crown, and now Ngāti Rārua is setting off on a new journey, as a call from home is issued to its people. Whakatuwhera o Te Heke Whakangā ki Mohua

Ngāti Rārua whānau whānui from across Te Tauihu gathered with Te Ātiawa and Ngāti Tama, Manawhenua ki Mohua and the local community to open Te Heke Whakangā ki Mohua on Friday.

Te Heke Whakangā honours our tupuna, acknowledging their tireless efforts to advocate to protect our lands and people, and reminding us of our shared history.

The exhibition features fascinating kōrero, stunning photographs, and displays. A poignant feature is the late Tui Martin sharing the story of the development of Onetahua Marae through digitised archival footage – reminding us again of the vision and dedication of our tupuna. We encourage you all to visit and learn about our hekengā, our purakau, and our people.

We thank all the whānau who provided their expertise to make this exhibition possible. Te Heke Whakangā – ‘The Ngāti Rārua journey, looking back, moving forward’ runs until end of July.

Golden Bay Museum Te Waka Huia o Mohua is located at 73 Commercial Street, Takaka. Opening hours are: Monday - Friday, 10 am to 3pm.

Kia ora e te whānau,
We’re sharing an update on the wharewaka project for the Anaweka Waka located in Mohua / Golden Bay.
The project is being led by Manawhenua ki Mohua, with the backing of Ngāti Rārua, Ngāti Tama, Te Ātiawa and Ngāti Kuia. The project aims to establish a wharewaka in Tākaka to house, protect and share this nationally significant taonga, and to create opportunities to tell our stories of waka voyaging and celestial navigation.
The wharewaka is proposed to be built on reserve land owned by the Tasman District Council, known as Pioneer Park. We need approval from Council to access the land, but before the Council can make that decision, public consultation needs to take place.

Tasman District Council is currently seeking community feedback on the proposed use of Pioneer Park as the location for this wharewaka.
We encourage our whānau to engage in this process and show their support.
You can support the kaupapa by making a submission through Shape Tasman. Submissions close 22 June.
