Black Belt Code of Conduct in Times of Dishonor ๐
A painful but very real situation in Taekwon-Do When an instructor leaves without honor and actively tries to damage the reputation of the Master and the Do-Jang they once belonged to, it strikes at the heart of loyalty, respect, and integrity the very pillars of Taekwon-Do.
Loyalty is to Taekwon-Do itself, and to the values passed down from General Choi Hong Hi,
Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-control, and indomitable spirit.
No individual, no matter their rank, stands above these principles.
๐ Protect the Dojangโs Integrity
The Do-Jang and its students are the priority, not the disgraced instructor.
The leadership must make a clear statement of values โ showing that the Do-Jang stands for honor, respect, and discipline, not personal grudges or disloyalty.
๐ Do Not Engage in the Same Behavior
The black belts and students should not retaliate with gossip, slander, or anger that lowers the club to the same dishonorable level.
Instead, let actions speak louder than words: keep training, teaching, and embodying Taekwon-Doโs true spirit.
๐ Clarify the Truth with Respect
If the instructor spreads lies or attacks the club, the Master (or senior leadership) should calmly clarify the truth to students and the community, without hostility.
The goal is not revenge, but to protect students from confusion and keep faith in the dojangโs principles.
๐ Guide the Friendships
Fellow black belts and students who remain friends with the dishonorable instructor must make a choice:
Stay loyal to the values of the art and the Master, or follow someone who abandoned them.
True loyalty is to the Do (the Way), not to a person who breaks it.
๐ Teach by Example
The role of the black belt is to be a guardian of honor, When dishonor appears, your response shows the depth of your training.
True rank is revealed not in technical knowledge or physical performance , but in how you uphold integrity during conflict.
The club should not dwell on the betrayal, but rather use it as a teaching moment:
That even senior instructors can fail in honor.
That black belts must constantly guard against ego, pride, and selfishness.
Students must see that the art is greater than any one person.
๐ What Happens to the Dishonorable Instructor?
In traditional martial arts culture, such a person is considered to have cut themselves off from the lineage and spirit of the art.
Their rank may remain on paper, but they lose the respect that gives rank meaning.
History will judge them not by their skill, but by their character.
๐ In short: The Do-Jang must hold its ground with dignity, protect its students, and let dishonor reveal itself.
