Today marks 40 years since homosexual law reform was passed in Aotearoa New Zealand!

It's an anniversary that invites both celebration and reflection.

Forty years ago, being gay was no longer a crime in New Zealand, thanks to the courage, determination and persistence of our people who stood up for equality, often at enormous personal risk. Their advocacy changed lives and helped shape the country we know today.

As Auckland's Rainbow Choir, we're especially mindful that many in our community remember those years firsthand. Others have grown up with freedoms that were hard won by those who came before us. Our choir brings together people from many generations, each with their own stories, experiences and reasons for singing.

Music has always been a way for communities to find one another, to speak when words alone aren't enough, and to celebrate who we are. We are proud to continue that tradition by creating a space where LGBTQIA+ people and our allies can be seen, heard and welcomed.

Today we honour everyone who fought for law reform, everyone who lived through those difficult years, and everyone who continues to work towards a more inclusive Aotearoa.

Their voices made change possible. We hope ours helps keep that legacy alive. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
