Kia ora. My name is Sourabh Kumar Sharma, and I am standing for election to the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board (Tāmaki Subdivision). Tāmaki is where I live, work, and raise my family, and it holds a special place in my heart. Over the years, I have seen our community’s strengths—its diversity, resilience, and strong sense of belonging—but I have also seen the challenges we face: increasing living costs, pressure on housing, safety concerns, and the need for improved infrastructure and services.
My journey has been shaped by a diverse career. I began as an engineering graduate, moved into retail management, developed and ran my own e-commerce business, and now own and operate a construction and renovation business. This background has given me practical problem-solving skills, experience in managing budgets and teams, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Most importantly, it has taught me the value of listening to people, understanding their needs, and delivering results.
I am standing for the local board because I believe effective local leadership starts with genuine connection to the community. Decisions made by the board directly impact our daily lives—whether it’s the condition of our streets and parks, the safety of our neighbourhoods, the quality of our public facilities, or the opportunities available to our youth. I want to ensure these decisions reflect what the people of Tāmaki truly want and need.
If elected, I will focus on five key priorities:
Safer, Well-Connected Streets and Transport – Advocate for better public transport links, improved road safety, and pedestrian- and cycle-friendly infrastructure to ensure all residents can move around the area safely and efficiently.
Affordable, Quality Housing – Support sustainable urban development and regeneration projects, while advocating for housing solutions that are both affordable and meet the needs of local families.
Improved Community Facilities and Services – Ensure our parks, libraries, sports grounds, and community centres are maintained, upgraded, and accessible to everyone.
Support for Local Businesses and Employment – Back initiatives that help small businesses grow, create local jobs, and provide training and pathways for young people to succeed.
Environmental Protection and Sustainability – Promote projects that protect our green spaces, improve our waterways, and reduce waste, ensuring Tāmaki remains a clean and healthy place to live.
I believe leadership is about service, not status. It is about listening first, acting decisively, and always putting community interests above personal gain. I am committed to transparent, accountable decision-making and to working collaboratively with residents, local groups, and other board members to deliver meaningful outcomes.
Tāmaki is a vibrant, diverse, and proud community. Together, we can make it safer, more connected, and full of opportunities for everyone. I would be honoured to earn your trust and your vote.
