Friends of the Park Pūhoi Friends of the Park - Pūhoi is a community group caring for the park’s natural, cultural, and community values.

🌿 Friends of the Park – Puhoi 🌿

We’re an independent local volunteer group who love Puhoi Memorial Park and want to see it cared for and enjoyed by everyone. The park itself is owned by Auckland Council and supported by the Rodney Local Board, but its heart and future lie in the hands of the community. It’s a shared space where people and nature can flourish together. Our mahi focuses on:
✨ Carin

g for nature – planting natives, protecting wildlife, and keeping the park healthy for future generations.
✨ Community connection – creating a space where locals and visitors alike can walk, play, and spend time together.
✨ Heritage & place – honouring the history of Puhoi while supporting the park as a hub for recreation and wellbeing.

💚 Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Every tree planted, pest trap checked, path cleared, or event organised happens because of local people giving their time and energy. Together, we make the park stronger, more welcoming, and more resilient. Whether you’ve got green thumbs, a love for walking tracks, or just a little time to give back, we’d love you to join us. Every bit of support helps our park thrive!

It’s not for money it’s not for fame or personal gain,
It’s for the love of nature and for a helping hand,
That is something you can’t buy with wealth.
It’s not medals won with pride, it’s for that feeling deep inside.
It’s that reward down in heart, it’s that feeling that you’re been a part, of helping others far and near that makes you be a Volunteer.

🐾 Friends of the Park – Predator Control Update

The numbers tell an important story about what’s happening across our network of 89 traps and bait stations.

Over the past 270 days, a total of 267 pests have been removed. In the most recent 30 days alone, 61 were caught, showing that predator pressure is still very active in the area.

🐀 Rats are currently the main pressure point
93 rats caught overall
40 rats caught in the last 30 days

Rats are making up the majority of recent catches, which highlights a clear spike in activity. This kind of surge can happen quickly, and it shows just how important consistent trapping is to keep numbers under control.

🪤 The unseen mahi – bait stations

Alongside trapping, bait stations are doing important work that doesn’t show up in trap counts.
Over the same period, around 10kg of rodent bait has been used, which confirms ongoing rodent activity in the wider area that we don’t always directly see.

Together, traps and bait stations give us a fuller picture:

Traps show what is physically caught
Bait stations show ongoing rodent pressure in the environment
🐾 Other catches (last 30 days)
Possums: 9
Hedgehogs: 2
Mustelids: 1
Other pests: 9
🌿 Why this matters

While the numbers show strong ongoing pressure — particularly from rats right now — they also show that the system is working. Every check, every reset, and every bait station refill is helping protect native birds, insects, and the wider ecosystem.

This is steady, consistent community conservation mahi — and it’s making a real difference.

🌳 ANZAC day and Young Josh joined the Friends of the Park trapping group today. Josh not only got stuck in, but was a good luck charm! 🐀

👀 Josh spotted a weasel in the undergrowth, the little thing was checking out a dead mouse caught in a trap for an easy meal. Thanks to Josh we have lured up the trap and will be setting a Doc200 there as well 🔥

Friends of the Park have been hard at work today, respraying the arundo and preparing the area for planting this July. The team has also been removing old galvanised football goals along the riverside — twisted and broken, they’ve become both an eyesore and a hazard. Their efforts are helping to create a safer, more welcoming space for everyone to enjoy.

Park life is fascinating, the bait stations are getting a workout on the river walkway. Unusual find was these 2 dead mice inside the bait station, and the amount of bait going indicates we were right on point to deploy the bait stations before April fish spawning along the riverbank. Any eggs would not have stood a chance. We hope we are doing enough in our own small way to make change for native wildlife.

Big win on the park today! This little critter could not resist the temptation of a well lured and set trap, using rabbit, fish lure, egg and a golf ball in a birds nest!

This super food and visual combination worked and one more tricky little weasel has been removed from the environment. Keeping traps checked baited regularly gets results! 👍

Well done super ninja trappers!

🟢 Bait stations are out and signage is up 💥

Lockable bait stations have now been deployed around the park and the signs are in place. Please keep your dogs on a lead and allow the bait stations to do their job. 🐁

Last year was our first toxin pulse — and it showed just how needed it was. An incredible 4kg of bait was taken in just six weeks. That’s a massive amount. This year, we’re aiming for only a tiny fraction of that, which would signal that predator numbers remain low.

This work is ongoing. Regular toxin pulses and consistent trapping are essential to keep predator numbers down and protect our wildlife.

Īnanga (native fish) spawning begins in April. 🐟
Our goal is simple: if they spawn, we want to ensure we’ve given them the very best chance of success — without being decimated by rodents in the river bank grass where they lay on high tide.

Thank you for supporting the mahi and helping protect this special place.
