We’re so pleased to see the recent closure on the harvesting of seaweed and invertebrates across Tāmaki Makaurau’s east coast, following the leadership and mahi of Ngāti Manuhiri.

Rockpools are more than just places to explore- they provide vital refuge for intertidal species during low tide, protecting them from heat stress and desiccation. These small ecosystems support incredibly high levels of biodiversity and play an important role in the health of our wider marine environment.

Because rockpools are so accessible, they are particularly vulnerable to human disturbance, including trampling and overharvesting. This new protection and rāhui will help overharvested populations recover and strengthen these fragile ecosystems for future generations.

Ngā mihi nui to for their kaitiakitanga and continued leadership in protecting our precious marine biodiversity.
