Tauhinu Sea Scout Group

Tauhinu Sea Scout Group The public page for Tauhinu Sea Scouts for members and non-members One of the group’s founding members and now Patron is Noel Shelling.

The Tauhinu Sea Scout group commenced activities on August 1955 , registered with Scouts New Zealand March 3rd, 1958 and is part of the Mahurangi Zone. Our group leader, Colin Mansfield, has been with the group since August 2005. Sea scouts in New Zealand celebrated its centenary in 2009. The group runs four sections – Keas for children aged 6-8, Cubs for children aged 8-10, Scouts for children a

ged 10-14 and Venturers for young adults aged 14-18. We run various outdoor activities based on the Scouting New Zealand programs with a strong focus on water activities. We engage in specific water-based activities and training, such as rowing and sailing. Our Scouts and Venturers participate regularly in regattas but our Cubs have exposure to rowing events too. We are fortunately here in Greenhithe to have the boat ramp facilities from which to launch our cutters and sunburst boats. We use the Salthouse boat ramp at the bottom of Rame Rd together with those right outside our own door of our “Ship” at 17 Rahui Rd. Tauhinu Sea Scout group has always had, and continues to have, a long term commitment to the youth of the Greenhithe Community. By guiding and teaching them scouting and boating skills we believe this equips them to become worthwhile and valuable members of our community.

Teamwork in the Wild! 🌲🌊

15 of our youth were out on the trails for their independent DofE and Chief Scout expeditions over this weekend.

From the 7-strong Bronze crew trekking from Dome Valley, to our 8 Silver Venturers navigating the coast from Waipu, everyone made it to the finish line at Pakiri Beach. Some 150 cumulative KMs covered by the three groups!

These hikes were planned and managed by the youth themselves. Seeing them work together, manage their pace, supporting each other and keeping spirits high over such a long distance was "oarsome" to see. ⛰️👏

Camp life at its best! 🌲 We’ve been busy with hobo-stove pancakes, bivouac building, and fire skills. The local fire engine even dropped by for a legendary water fight! It’s been a day of non-stop food and fun, and we’re just getting started—the campfire is still to come!

Day 2 at Mita Bay has been another busy one for scouts summer camp. We spent the day rotating through sailing, rowing, and kayaking, with plenty of time left over for the groups to explore the coastline and bush. It’s been great to see everyone getting stuck into the water activities and picking up new skills ⛵️🛶
