How are Christians to respond to a nation that sacrifices babies at the rate of 60,000 a year?
We must first recognize what the issue really is. Our abortion holocaust is not an issue of politics. It is not an issue of healthcare. It is the fruit of a nation that has rejected its Lord and Creator. The people of New Zealand have chosen to place themselves above the law of Almighty God.
Any faithful response from the Church must be grounded in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Gospel alone has the power to change hearts and minds, and to lead New Zealand to repentance.
The mainstream pro-life movement doesn’t see things this way. Portraying themselves as ‘religiously unaffiliated’, they appeal to science, philosophy and education to reach a wider audience, generally reserving biblical language for Christian audiences.
Of course, science and philosophy are useful tools, but they are insufficient without first establishing a foundation of truth, justice and human rights. The Word of God provides the only sufficient basis upon which we can effectively combat the evils in our culture.
No amount of ‘pro-life education’ will bring repentance, because our nation does not have a knowledge problem but a heart problem. It’s no use explaining that life begins at conception if the sanctity of life is not recognized. Nor is it effective to call abortion murder if murder is not seen as sin.
For too long the anti-abortion movement has hidden the light of the gospel under a basket. The result has been increasingly liberal abortion legislation and a steadily rising death toll. Scripture is clear: the power to bring real change is not found in the size of your movement, but in the transformative power of the Gospel.
