Kia ora koutou,

Across Aotearoa, many whānau are living with Child‑to‑Parent Violence and Abuse (CPVA). It's an experience that’s seldom spoken about, frequently misunderstood and often carried in silence.

At VisAble, we’re committed to strengthening the systems designed to keep people safe. To do that well, we need insights from the people working closest to families and communities.

That’s where you come in.

We’re inviting professionals to share their experience

Your input will help us better understand how CPVA shows up in real-world settings and how services can respond more effectively. This includes situations where tamariki, rangatahi, or adult children use violence or abusive behaviour toward parents, caregivers, grandparents, or siblings.

For many families, the journey is isolating. Your knowledge can help shape more responsive, confident support across sectors.

Your responses will contribute to:

- A clearer picture of CPVA in Aotearoa

- Identifying gaps and pressure points across services

- Strengthening training, policy, and sector capability

- A public report designed to support long-term, system-level improvement

- Confidential and secure

- No personal information is collected

- Data is stored securely and accessed only by VisAble researchers

- All reporting is fully de‑identified

Survey open: 2 March – 13 April 2026

Complete the survey: https://lnkd.in/ePR2sGAy

If this kaupapa connects to your sector or networks, please share it.

Every professional perspective helps build safer pathways for whānau across Aotearoa.

Ngā mihi nui for your contribution to community safety.

Kia ora koutou,

At VisAble, we work to strengthen the systems that keep individuals, families, and communities safe. Today, we’re inviting professionals across Aotearoa New Zealand to support a kaupapa that urgently needs more visibility: Child-to-Parent Violence and Abuse (CPVA).

CPVA involves children (including adult children) using violence or abusive behaviour toward parents, caregivers, grandparents, or siblings. It’s an issue that is often hidden, misunderstood, and incredibly difficult for whānau to navigate.

Many families experiencing CPVA feel isolated, ashamed, and unsure where to seek help. Your professional knowledge can help change that.

Why your perspective matters

By completing this survey, you’ll help us:

- Highlight the real‑world impact of CPVA on families and whānau

- Identify gaps that prevent effective service responses

- Strengthen capability across sectors to recognise and respond to CPVA

- Inform policy, training, and systems-level change

- Contribute to a publicly available report designed to support long‑term solutions

Your privacy and safety

- No personal information is collected

- Responses are securely stored

- Only VisAble researchers have access

- All findings will be fully de‑identified

Survey open: 2 March – 13 April 2026

The more insights we gather, the stronger our collective response can be.

Thank you to our CPVA Lead Lee Tempest and Journalist Paulette Crowley for this article this week!

It's encouraging to see The Listener and nzherald.co.nz bringing much-needed attention to child to parent violence this week. A form of family violence that remains largely hidden and misunderstood in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Too often, parents and caregivers experiencing harm from their children face blame, disbelief, or silence. This response only heightens isolation and delays access to the support they desperately need.

Child to parent violence must be recognised as genuine harm, while being met with empathy, trauma informed approaches, and holistic support for the entire whānau. Acknowledging this issue does not equate to criminalising children. Instead, it means embracing the complexity of the situation, addressing unmet needs, and building systems capable of balancing accountability with compassion.

Public discussions like this are vital. They help reduce stigma, validate the lived experiences of caregivers, and drive us toward more humane, effective responses.

Thank you to The Listener and The Herald for shining a light on this important topic. At VisAble, we're committed to making child to parent violence and abuse (CPVA) more visible and ensuring families receive the understanding and resources they deserve.

If you're supporting a family navigating this, or would like to learn more, feel free to connect or reach out.
