A little over three years ago, we were alerted to an injured stray. An old boy, wounded and weary, he was wearing the scars of many years struggling on the streets.
As suspected he was FIV+, the option to euthanise him there & then was tabled by the vet. Given his condition, we wouldn’t have been wrong to agree, but we’re all about chances here.
The following day he had surgery, his wounds cleaned & debrided, his jewels removed & the cancerous lesions on his nose removed.
Home he came & that’s when we got to know the magnificent boy we named Dorgle.
The location of his wounds, infection & his compromised immunity, meant that he struggled to heal. Never did he protest a tablet, ointment, poking, prodding he would lay outstretched for us to clean & dress them… for over a year. All the while, he lived in a head collar (as in the photo) & wore it with no complaints & great style.
While he ate everything his teeth needed attention & we faced another dilemma
a) do the dental work with the high risk he wouldn’t heal & we’d have to euthanise or
b) leave them as they were & monitor - we opted for B.
Then came kidney disease. Slow to start & managed with diet & then it started to take its toll.
Our hearts are broken as earlier this week we had to say our final farewell. 💔 His final day came without warning & something we weren’t emotionally prepared for - a complication of his kidney disease.
Often we’re asked “Why” we didn’t euthanise him on day 1.
Well, rescue isn’t always about cute & fluffy, it often needs difficult decisions to be made & ultimately needs to be about the quality of life of those under our care.
Yes, he needed a little extra care, but the quality of his life was good & what he should have always had.
In all honesty, he gave us & everyone he met far more in return.
This week I’ve often looked out the corner of my eye looking for our magnificent, chatty, incredibly affectionate boy. The boy who followed us around like a dog & wanted to be close enough for a head bop or cuddle at every opportunity.
As with countless cats in our communities, “that cat” the stray, seen by so many & ignored by them all.
The boy who ran to us on day 1, came into our lives, the boy who just wanted to be safe & who loved with all his heart.

Sorry for the long read, but condensing his life & personality was a challenge.
