This weekend we have 39 cadets and NCOs from No. 30 Squadron out at Whenuapai for our Mid Aviation Camp!

Flights kicked off at 0900 from the Aviation Sports Club, with classroom periods running alongside; flight planning, aviation weather, radio comms, met, and aircraft propulsion. Sunday brings more flying, pre-flight checks and a visit to the base fire station.

Sun’s out, weather’s playing ball, and the cadets are having a great day learning and having fun!

On 25 April, No. 30 (Hobsonville) Squadron, ATC took part in two ANZAC Day services in West Auckland.

The day began at Waikumete Cemetery in Glen Eden, where selected cadets served as ceremonial guard at the Auckland Provincial Memorial during the 5.55am dawn service.

Later that morning, the squadron assembled at Swanson School and marched down Swanson Road to the Swanson RSA, joining veterans, serving personnel and members of the local community for the 9am service.

A total of 53 cadets, 17 NCOs and 5 staff were on parade across the day.

ANZAC Day remains one of the most significant days on the squadron calendar, providing cadets with the opportunity to take part in a national day of remembrance and represent the squadron within the community.

They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun
and in the morning

We will remember them
Lest we forget

No. 30 Squadron welcomed 31 new Basic 1 cadets who have officially begun their journey in the Air Training Corps.

The evening focused on introductions — learning about the structure of the unit, meeting their section leaders and Flight NCOs, and getting their first exposure to drill and general parade night activities. For many, it was their first experience of cadet life.

While there were a few nerves at the start of the night, it didn’t take long for new friendships to begin forming. Over the coming weeks, these recruits will build the foundations of their training as they prepare for their Basic Recruit Training weekend next month, where they will graduate into uniform.

We look forward to seeing their confidence and skills develop as they take their first steps within No. 30 Squadron.

Late last year, No. 30 Squadron closed out the training year with its annual Final Parade and Prize-Giving — an evening that recognised the effort, resilience and growth of our cadets across 2025.

Held on 11 December, the parade brought together cadets, staff and invited guests for a formal inspection, presentation of trophies, long service recognition, and a significant round of promotions. It was a night that reflected just how far the squadron had progressed over the course of the year.

Throughout the evening, cadets were recognised for attendance, service, leadership, marksmanship and overall achievement. Five-year long service awards were also presented, acknowledging sustained commitment to the unit.

A total of 23 promotions were awarded across the squadron, marking an important step forward for those cadets taking on greater responsibility in 2026.

Major award recipients included:
De Vos van Steenwijk Trophy (Attendance & Service) – W/O McGowan
Support Committee Trophy for Endeavour – CPL Purcell
Marksmanship Trophy (Score of 80) – SGT Diener Whitelaw
RNZAF Bomber Command Trophy – CDT Wallhaus-Yahel
Most Improved Cadet – SGT Cliffin
Best JNCO – CPL Riddle
Best All Round Cadet – CDT Finn Dawson Smith
Unit Commander’s Trophy – OFFCDT Gibson

While the year has since moved on, the December parade remains an important milestone for the squadron and a strong foundation for the training year ahead.

Recently, 31 cadets and 3 staff from 30 Squadron spent the weekend at Karamatura Valley in the Waitākere Ranges for our Basic Bushcraft Camp. The rain came and went throughout the weekend, but instead of slowing things down it added a bit more adventure to the experience and gave the cadets a real taste of operating outdoors (its not training if its not raining right?).

Once we reached the valley and got camp set up, the group settled into the rhythm of bush life. Cadets learned how to choose a safe campsite, put up shelters, manage their own gear and keep things organised when everything is a little damp. They also worked through navigation skills like orienting a map, reading terrain and understanding how to match what they saw on paper with the trails and features around them.

The rain and mud helped bring the group together. Cadets teamed up to get tents secure, share cooking gear, help each other stay on track during activities and keep spirits up when things got a bit challenging. The fieldcraft sessions encouraged them to move with more awareness and work closely with their sections, and the night training gave them a chance to rely on each other and stay confident in unfamiliar conditions.

By the time we packed up on Sunday, the team was tired, a bit muddy and definitely ready for a hot shower, but also proud of what they’d learned and achieved. It was a weekend full of practical skills, good challenges and the kind of teamwork that builds confidence for future training.

Thanks to the staff and NCOs who supported the cadets throughout and helped make the camp a success!

An unforgettable Thursday night for 30 Squadron Cadets!

Some of our Cadets had the incredible opportunity to visit 6 SQN RNZAF and Base Operations on RNZAF Base Auckland. They toured the 6 SQN hangar, explored the Seasprite helicopters, chatted with the maintenance crew, and saw the heart of the Base in action at Base Ops.

The night was topped off with a surprise arrival! A 3 SQN NH-90 helicopter returning from exercises over Auckland City!

A massive thank you to the RNZAF personnel who took time out of their busy schedules to share their knowledge and give our Cadets an experience they won’t forget.
