Heal The Hauraki

Heal The Hauraki Join us on the journey as we share solutions in actions, pathways & people that are helping to heal our precious moana.

It starts with connection — being out on the moana, seeing it for yourself.

For the next generation of leaders and healers of Ngāti Manuhiri, that connection includes action.
AtariaMacDonald & Ihipera O'Kane alongside others, are learning to understand the ecosystem beneath the surface — gathering data, building knowledge, and playing an active role in protecting & restoring the seafloor.

It’s a quiet kind of leadership.
Grounded in care, curiosity, and a deep responsibility for what comes next.

Follow along as we meet the next generation helping to heal the Hauraki Gulf.

These “little suckers” might be some of the most important workers in our ocean.

Green-lipped mussels (kūtai) don’t just sit on the seafloor - they clean, filter and restore the moana every single day.

But after decades of damage, ecosystems are under pressure.
The science is clear.
The Hauraki Gulf is struggling.

So the question is… what do we do?

Step 1 - Love the "little suckers".

Step 2 - Find out more and follow the stories as we shine a light on those restoring the Hauraki Gulf, one "little sucker" at a time.

“You can’t kaitiaki from behind a desk.” Nicola Rata-MacDonald gently shares with us her perspective as someone deeply connected to the Hauraki Gulf and its community of care.

From her experience, it’s a reminder that those in leadership and positions of influence must stay connected, grounded and present to the places we call home and people they seek to serve.

Over the past decade, Dan Hikuroa has helped bring together research, data and insight on the state of the Hauraki Gulf. But one of the most powerful things he reminds us of is something simple — connection.

“If we don’t have a relationship with the ocean, it’s really hard to care about it.”

When we begin to see and feel the effects of an ecosystem under pressure, it stops being “numbers”. It becomes real. And in that moment, we’re faced with a choice.

This series is about making sense of the big ideas — ecosystem, biodiversity, habitat — and grounding them in something we can all connect to. Because when we understand our place within it, the path forward feels a little clearer, and a little more possible.

Throughout the Heal the Hauraki series, Dan helps make sense of big topics like ecosystems, biodiversity, and habitat—breaking them down in a way that feels clear and grounded, then connecting them to small, meaningful actions.

As a respected Earth systems scientist at the University of Auckland, he brings decades of lived experience across environmental research, policy, and education. Dan has become a leading voice in Aotearoa for weaving information & knowledge systems together to better understand and care for our natural world.

He understands that the health of our oceans is inseparable from the health of our people and whenua (land).

At the heart of Dan’s work is a deep commitment to communities. He has worked alongside iwi, hapū, government agencies, and researchers to co-create solutions grounded in both environmental values and scientific evidence. Whether contributing to national policy, advising on environmental management, or supporting local restoration efforts, Dan brings people together—helping to build shared understanding, trust, and collective action for te taiao.

Nicola is an ocean advocate, community mobiliser, and a leader who lives and breathes care for te taiao. For her, this work is deeply personal — grounded in the understanding that our connection to the moana is woven into who we are, and that when it thrives, so do we.

Across Tīkapa Moana — the Hauraki Gulf — Nicola is helping lead some of the most significant protection and restoration work underway today, guided by a deep sense of responsibility to the moana, the whenua, and the generations to come.

A dedicated conservationist, she has led the deployment of the world’s largest shellfish bed restoration in Te Moananui-ā-Toi. In the Mahurangi, she’s been part of planting over 350,000 trees — restoring whenua, strengthening ecosystems, and helping respond to the impacts of climate change.

In Episode 3 of Heal the Hauraki, we follow Nicola to learn more about the challenges facing the Gulf, and the collective action, partnerships, and community-led solutions helping restore the mauri of our moana.

We’ll be there to show our love for the moana 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

Mussel reefs once blanketed the seafloor of the Hauraki Gulf, forming vibrant underwater ecosystems full of life.

Reviving them is essential to restoring the mauri of the moana— its living essence.

The good news? This work has already begun.

As these habitats return, so too does biodiversity—along with natural processes that help cleanse the water and reduce sedimentation.
