This Volunteers Month, we’re celebrating Jacqui Toung — proud mum of 4, grandmother to 7, and a former HR professional who brings her wisdom, empathy, and a people‑first approach to everything she does.

Jacqui leads our Matamata, Tokoroa and Tauranga support groups, creating safe, welcoming spaces where caregivers can connect.

June is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and we’re celebrating in a big way.

2026 is the Year of Volunteer Storytelling, and throughout this month we’ll be sharing the voices, journeys, and experiences of a few of the incredible volunteers who make our work possible.

Volunteer Spotlight: Anna Clare

Anna is our South Christchurch Support Group Coordinator. She's been in the role for 7 years, supporting our whānau in the region.

We asked Anna a few questions about her volunteering journey:

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?
My background is in nursing (for a couple of years), social work and early child education. I worked in social work for many years in both statuary and NGO agencies. Then lived in community in USA for 5 years. On return to NZ decided to train in early childhood but then secured employment in an agency where both quals were valuable.

What inspired you to start volunteering with GRG?
I restarted GRG Christchurch because I needed like minded people who understood my life, the struggles and the joys and the group here had disappeared.

What’s a moment you’re particularly proud of in your volunteering journey?
The way I get to witness incredible people go through a really hard time and come out even stronger and keen to help others.

What advice would you give someone thinking about volunteering for the first time?
Do it! It's a commitment and can be taxing and busy but the joy is greater.

A mother can go by many names.

Mum. Nan. Gran. Nana. Kuia. Aunty. Whānau.

So many of the grandmothers and whānau carers we work with never expected to be raising children again. But when their mokopuna needed them, they didn't hesitate. They just said yes - and kept saying yes, every morning since.

That kind of love deserves to be celebrated today and every day.

Happy Mother's Day 💛

Feeling unsure about technology and tamariki? You’re not alone.

Many caregivers tell us they worry about how much screen time is okay, what tamariki are watching, and how to manage technology without constant conflict.

Our latest newsletter shares practical, realistic technology tips designed to help carers feel more confident, calm, and in control of technology use at home.

✨ The tips focus on:
• Modelling positive technology use yourself
• Developing a whānau/family technology plan
• Offering choices within safe boundaries
• Developing a technology routine
• Supporting smooth transitions away from screens

These strategies can help reduce stress and support healthier tech habits for the whole whānau.

ANZAC Day – Lest We Forget

Today we pause to remember and honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of all those who have served our country. ANZAC Day is a time for reflection, gratitude, and quiet respect - for the lives lost, the families changed, and the legacy passed down through generations.

At Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, we recognise how deeply the values of resilience, care, and family run through our community. Many of our grandparents carry stories of service and sacrifice, and today we hold space for remembrance and connection across generations.

Please note: our office will be closed on Monday 27 April as we observe ANZAC Day. We will reopen as usual on Tuesday.

We hope you are able to take a moment today to reflect in a way that feels meaningful to you and your whānau.

Lest we forget.

We had a fantastic morning in Taranaki today!

Our Interim General Manager, Dr Braden Clark, delivered a workshop on caring for tamariki who have experienced trauma and adversity.

In this workshop, we discussed practical strategies and approaches carers can use to support regulation in their day-to-day care of children.

We spoke about the importance of movement as a form of regulation. Putting your own oxygen mask on first by taking care of yourself is so important for whānau carers.

Thanks to the Taranaki Foundation for their support and for helping to make this possible.
