We are deeply grateful to share that 28 Asian communities across Aotearoa New Zealand have stood alongside us by providing letters of support for our response to the Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

Asian communities’ support means so much because, as a national provider working closely with Asian communities for the past 28 years, we continue to see the very real gaps in access and care. Our communities are rich in language, culture, ethnicity, migration journeys, faith, age, family structures, and lived experience. When systems take a one-size-fits-all approach, too many people are left feeling unseen, unheard, and unsupported.

We believe the true success of the Strategy will be measured not only by its vision, but by how equity is brought to life in practice. For Asian communities, that means services must be designed, commissioned, funded, delivered, measured, and held accountable in ways that are culturally responsive, inclusive, and grounded in community realities.

We thank the Ministry of Health - Manatū Hauora for the opportunity to share this feedback. We welcome the Strategy’s strong focus on prevention, early intervention, access, workforce development, lived experience, quality, and system-wide partnerships. These priorities matter deeply, and we hope to see them translated into action so that every person and family can access a mental health and wellbeing system that feels fair, inclusive, and compassionate.

With the strength and support of our communities behind us, we have now submitted our feedback to the Ministry of Health. We sincerely hope the collective voice of Asian communities will be heard, valued, and reflected in the path ahead.

Asian Family Services had the pleasure of meeting with John Allen, Chief Ombudsman NZ, and the team from the Office of the Ombudsman New Zealand.

It was a productive dialogue exploring the purpose and mahi of our organisations, with a focus on New Zealand’s growing Asian communities and their experiences of public services.

We appreciated the openness of the conversation and the shared commitment to ensuring public systems are accessible, responsive, and trusted by all communities.

At AFS, we see firsthand the importance of culturally grounded engagement and the role it plays in helping people navigate services, understand their rights, and raise concerns when needed.

We look forward to continuing this conversation and supporting efforts that contribute to more inclusive public systems.

Today is Pink Shirt Day, a day to stand together against bullying and support safer, kinder communities for all children and young people.

Bullying remains a real issue in Aotearoa. 13% of students in New Zealand are frequently bullied, higher than the OECD average of 9%. For ethnic communities, the impact is also significant, one in five learners from ethnic communities experienced racist bullying in the last month.

AFS’ 2025 Asian Mental Health report also showed that 46.3% of Asian parents said their child had experienced bullying at school in the past year.

That is why culturally responsive conversations matter.

Over the past few weeks, AFS has supported Pink Shirt Day through Stop Bullying workshops with Chinese, Indian and Korean communities across Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton, with support from the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.

Across all workshops, we were grateful to engage with over 70 parents, caregivers and community members, creating safe spaces to talk about bullying, children’s wellbeing, and how to support young people with empathy, care and confidence.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined our workshops, shared their thoughts, and helped create meaningful conversations in their communities.

Supporting Pink Shirt Day is not only about wearing pink. It is also about the everyday actions we take, at home, at school and in the community, to help children feel safe, heard and valued.

Together, we can help create a future where every child feels they belong.

Today, we’re wrapping up our Pink Shirt Day Stop Bullying workshop series with our community workshop in Hamilton.

Led by our Public Health Promoter Miran, this session was held for the Korean community, creating a familiar and culturally supportive space for parents and caregivers to talk openly about bullying, family communication, and children’s wellbeing.

What stood out from this workshop was the importance of having these conversations in a way that feels safe, relevant and connected to people’s own community experiences.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Hamilton, and to all the communities who took part in this workshop series across Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton.

As Pink Shirt Day reminds us, creating safer and kinder environments for children starts with the conversations we are willing to have — at school, at home, and in our communities.

Today, we’re sharing moments from our Auckland Stop Bullying workshop for the Indian community to support Pink Shirt Day.

Led by our Public Health Lead, Mithila, and Cultural Support Ragni. This session was held with Balvikas Classes, a children’s cultural and values-based learning programme run by Bhartiya Mandir Hindu Temple. run by Bhartiya Mandir Hindu Temple, creating a meaningful and culturally appropriate space for Indian families to learn, share, and reflect together.

Throughout the workshop, participants explored practical ways to recognise when a child may be struggling, listen with empathy, communicate with care, and help children feel safe, heard and supported.

It was lovely to see parents actively joining the discussion and reflecting on how these conversations can continue at home.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to support Pink Shirt Day, and to Bhartiya Mandir Hindu Temple for helping create this supportive space.

Today, we’re sharing moments from our Auckland Stop Bullying workshop to support Pink Shirt Day.

Led by our Public Health Lead, Annie, the workshop was delivered for the Chinese IT Association (CITA), bringing parents and caregivers together to talk about how we can better support children when they experience bullying at school.

Together, we explored practical ways to notice when a child may be struggling, listen with empathy, communicate with care, and help children feel safe, heard and supported.

It was lovely to see participants actively joining the discussion, sharing their thoughts, and reflecting on how these conversations can happen at home.

Many shared that the workshop felt relevant and helpful, and that they felt more confident about talking with their children about bullying and knowing where to seek support.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Auckland, and to CITA for helping create this meaningful space. These conversations may feel small in the moment, but they can make a real difference for children and families.

As we get closer to Pink Shirt Day, AFS recently held Stop Bullying workshops in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington, creating warm and supportive spaces for parents and caregivers to talk about how to support children when they experience bullying at school.

Over the next few days, we’ll be sharing moments from each workshop. Today, we’re highlighting our Wellington workshop.

Hosted by our National Manager, Hong, and Health Navigator Lin, the Wellington workshop was held for Chinese parents and caregivers. Together, we explored practical ways parents can respond during difficult moments, from listening with empathy, to communicating with care, to helping children feel safe, heard and supported.

It was lovely to see Wellington community members actively joining the discussion, sharing their thoughts, and reflecting on how these conversations can happen at home. Many participants said the topic felt very relevant and helpful, and that they felt more confident about talking with their children about bullying.

The workshop also introduced a range of support resources, helping parents know where to turn when extra help is needed.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Wellington. Moments like this remind us how powerful it can be when community comes together to learn, share and support one another.

No child or family should feel alone when facing bullying.
