Waiatarua / Oratia / Henderson Valley Community Patrol - CPNZ

Waiatarua / Oratia / Henderson Valley Community Patrol - CPNZ We patrol day and night, weekdays and weekends. Since our inception, we have completed over 900 patrols and contributed over 5,000 volunteer hours.

We are the Waiatarua/Oratia/Henderson Valley Community Patrol (known as Waiatarua Community Patrol) – a group of volunteers working in our community to help keep it safe and prevent crime. The Waiatarua Community Patrol Charitable Trust is affiliated to CPNZ (Community Patrols of NZ) whose purpose is to empower communities to prevent crime and create safer environments through the utilisation of t

rained and equipped volunteer patrols. Waiatarua patrol is responsible primarily for the Waiatarua, Oratia and Henderson Valley areas patrolling neighbourhoods and providing high visibility within the community. Our aim is to reduce the opportunity for criminal activity by acting as a deterrent through the visibility of our vehicle. We always patrol in pairs and login with Police District Communication Centre at the beginning and end of each patrol. Volunteer patrollers give as many hours as their schedules allow (generally a flexible commitment of around 4 hours per month - or more if they have the time). Patrol groups have full backing from NZ Police (while remaining financially independent) and act as “eyes and ears” for the Police, gathering intel and reporting incidents. All applicants (and age is no barrier) are vetted by Police, put through training and every member must sign a declaration of confidentiality and a code of conduct. We have been operating since August 2013 and have a sign written patrol vehicle and a team of around 30 patrollers. We have reported over 600 incidents to Police and Council including stolen vehicles, dumped rubbish, graffiti, and damaged property. If you have any questions please either contact us here or phone Sue (Patrol Co-ordinator) on 021 681 207. For more information, see the CPNZ website: http://www.cpnz.org.nz

Waitematā Police are reminding businesses to be vigilant, after a spate of attempted fraudulent activity in recent weeks.

Waitematā CIB Detective Sergeant Mark Renfree says Police are aware of three recent incidents where a person or persons have attempted to obtain goods fraudulently.

“In each case, an individual has called a local hardware-type business and placed an order for a large amount of product.

“This person has attempted to charge the product to the account of a company known to the business.”

Once approved, the scammer has sent an Uber driver to pick up the items.

“So not only are they committing fraud, but they are also putting innocent and unaware Uber drivers into the middle of this offending,” Detective Sergeant Renfree says.

An investigation into these incidents is ongoing, however Police want to warn businesses to be aware of this specific type of scam and to take steps to safeguard against it.

“Our message is simple, do not allow anyone to charge items to an account without verifying them and obtaining identification of the caller,” says Detective Sergeant Renfree.

“Anyone purchasing goods should know all the company details they are charging to.”

Businesses should follow these steps:

➡️Verify all orders placed over the phone, especially if the caller is unknown
➡️Cross-check contact details with official account records
➡️ Do not dispatch goods until the order is confirmed by a known contact
➡️ Report any suspicious activity to Police

“We are reminding people to be vigilant and cross-check all details,” Detective Sergeant Renfree says.

“And most importantly, do not hand over anything until you are satisfied everything is correct.”

Police are encouraging any suspicious behaviour to be reported online at 105.police.govt.nz or by calling 105.

Information can also be reported anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Can you spare a few hours a month to help out our Leadership Committee?

We are looking for a volunteer to join our team as Secretary. This is a great way to help support your neighbours and keep our wonderful community safe, and you will be an important part of our close knit team.

You don’t need to become a patroller (unless you would like to!) but the position does require police vetting.

We’d love to hear from you… please send us a message or contact Renee for more details on 027 261 4548.
