Doll's House for Starship

A beautifully crafted doll’s house, originally built by shed member Colin Watkins as a fundraising project, has found a very special home.
We also 3D-printed the furniture and installed LED lighting,
then the Shed donated it to a young girl at Starship Hospital through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

New Zealand has excellent maternity services, yet sadly around 700 babies each year are stillborn or die within the first weeks of life. Along with their grief, many families also face funeral costs.

Last year, Aroha Funeral Services asked our Shed to make caskets for parents experiencing financial hardship after a perinatal death. With funding support from St Johns and Ellerslie Rotary, arranged through shed member and Rotarian Peter Buchanan, we built 10 caskets in three sizes.

The response from families was deeply appreciated, and we were recently asked to make another 10. Rotary again provided funding, and the caskets are now with Aroha Funerals ready for gifting.

A great example of the Shed, Rotary, and local business supporting the community together.

Stonefields School Projects.

Based on an old fashioned set of scales apparently used in demonstrating good and bad behaviour.
We had to come up with a design prototype utilizing springs to control the movement, then made 3 more.

Last week sheddie Nigel High, ably assited by Steven Bissett, finished this project
installing 8 of these new cubicle table tops.
Much to the joy of students and teachers alike.

Something a bit special from the Mens Shed Auckland East this week.
A lovely antique cast iron sewing machine table repurposed as a very cool hall occasional table, or use it as a sewing table, craft table, or for your laptop. The treadle plate makes a perfect foot rest and moves nicely so you can get a bit of exercise while you work.

The top is fashioned from a beautiful Kauri slab with natural edge back and front. This has been professionally flattened and finished with Rubion monocoat which is a hard wax oil.
It is 745mm long, between 460 & 510mm wide, by 740mm high and is on wheels.

The frame was cleaned and treated with two coats of Penetrol to prevent rust and maintain the patina.

The table is from a "Laidlaw Special #3" sewing machine. These were American made but branded for NZ by Robert Laidlaw, the founder of Farmers Trading Company. Dates from between 1909 and about 1920.

If you would like to aquire it, suggested donation $380.

Kiwi Carriers ready to ship.
An order for 15 STK Kiwi Transport boxes made by our Conservation Crew in the Barn. They were sent on a barge to Motutapu Island. 15 to 20 kiwis will be collected and taken to a number of pest-free sanctuaries to set up breeding. Motutapu's birds were established as a safe haven colony during COVID-19 shutdown. They have thrived and there are now several 100 birds on the island. The STK staff gave very positive comments on our masterpieces and will give any further feedback after this relocation exercise. We expect to get another order for a further 35 boxes.

Liquorice Movie Stools.
Sheddie Paul Whitcomb was given 3 pedestals to dump,
but he was so impressed with their integrity,
he decided to create some stools for his home theatre.
He built the box seats on top of the pedestals lso they will ift up
to store your drinks and snacks and he decorated them to look like
his favourite Liquorice allsort.
Great recycling project, strong and useful.

Rebated Dedication Plaque
Unfortunately, dedication plaques are not too safe in public places these days.
So the Shed was asked to rebate and glue this plaque to a public seat plank
which will make it very hard to remove.

Phoenix Wheelbarrow
The Shed was asked to restore a garden wheelbarrow.
On close examination it was discovered that only the steel wheel could be recovered.
So Sheddie Murray Greg rolled up his sleeves and built the rest of it from scratch.
Now its good for many summers, to decorate a gardeners patch !
Its gone back to a very happy gardener, with its new "bones" and memories intact.
