For 26-year-old Nanise Rokotea, being admitted to the Bar is more than a professional achievement — it is a victory over the moments when she came close to giving up.

The young woman from Kasavu, Vugalei, Naitasiri, with maternal links to Drue in Kadavu, was among 30 University of the South Pacific (USP) students admitted to the Bar today as solicitors and barristers.

Her achievement also marks a special milestone for her family, as she is now the first lawyer in her family.

However, reaching this point was anything but easy.

While completing her Professional Diploma in Legal Practice (PDLP), Rokotea faced significant financial difficulties and came close to abandoning her studies because she was struggling to pay her fees.

“During week six, I almost ended my journey,” she said.

Support from her brother in the United States helped her continue, while her parents remained a constant source of encouragement. She also credits her mother’s prayers for giving her strength during some of the most challenging moments.

Getting to USP each day was another test of her determination. For early morning lectures, Rokotea would wake at 4.30am, catch a bus at 5.30am and make several connections before finally reaching campus.

The long journeys, financial pressures and moments of self-doubt could easily have ended her pursuit of a legal career.

Instead, she persevered.

Today, Rokotea stands as a qualified lawyer — proving that determination, family support and faith can help overcome even the toughest obstacles.
