Yesterday, our Chief Executive, Ah-Leen Rayner, spoke at the Pink Ribbon Breakfast at Parliament about the urgent need to improve access to diagnosis for women eligible for breast screening who present with breast cancer symptoms.
Currently, women attending routine screening who report symptoms such as a lump are turned away and told to see their GP instead. Ah-Leen highlighted that enabling BreastScreen Aotearoa to refer these women directly to specialist services could remove up to eight weeks of delay, ease pressure on primary care, and help reduce inequities in access to diagnosis and treatment.
For anyone who has experienced the stress and uncertainty of waiting for answers, we know how important timely access to care can be. Earlier assessment means earlier reassurance, diagnosis, and treatment when needed.
If you notice changes in your breasts, such as a lump, thickening, skin changes, ni**le discharge, or persistent pain, don’t ignore them. Trust your instincts and seek medical advice.
