Restoring New Zealand Waterways

Million Metres is an online fundraising platform. We raise money for restoring the banks of New Zealand streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands with native bush.

Our goal is to raise funds to plant one million metres of waterways with native plants and trees. We’d like to get this done by 2026!

The initiative is led by the Sustainable Business Network, in partnership with the Department of Conservation.

HOW IT WORKS

We help land owners and community groups set up and run crowdfunding campaigns to raise money for planting. Each project has it’s own fundraising page at millionmetres.org.nz

Each project also works with a field partner. This is usually the local council or a trust. It must be an organisation that can provide expert advice on waterway restoration.

WHY PLANT PLANT WATERWAYS?

62% of the length of all New Zealand rivers fails to meet safe swimming standards.

74% of native freshwater fish species are threatened with extinction. In 1990 this was 30% (that’s a 44% increase!).

Planting helps to stabalise the banks of waterways, reduces erosion, filters pollutants and restores native habitat for wildlife.

THE IMPACT SO FAR

More than $650,000 has been raised for 30 planting projects across New Zealand!

Once you donate, you receive annual project updates that will inform you with changes to animal life and water quality. In just two short years of operating, our first projects are already reporting back with progress!

Our Pongaroa Station project has had an increase in the endangered long fin eel, due to the river and stream bank habitats offering more cover and shade.

Our Taharoa project told us their water and fish monitoring team have seen major changes since planting. They reported that bird numbers are up, with more kingfishers, ducks, herons and stilts.

By donating to projects on the Million Metres platform, you're not just funding a few metres of stream bank restoration, you're taking part of something much bigger. You'll be playing an important part in the story of how New Zealanders can come together to restore our waterways.
