Please stop interviewing Chinese international students and reporting on the PRC Embassy to get the “Chinese New Zealander” take on this issue.

Winston Peters didn’t make these comments to someone who is a visitor on a non-permanent visa, a foreigner by definition and legality.

He told a New Zealand citizen to go to a different country.
Not a visitor. Not a foreigner. A New Zealander.

It would be as ridiculous as if an England-born, NZ-citizen, Pākehā man who lived here for 30 years was told to go back to England, and the media decided to interview a British backpacker for her thoughts. One is a New Zealander who is at home, the other is a guest with another home.

The mixing up of these people are precisely the reason people with Asian faces continue to be seen as foreign.

Hundreds of thousands of Asian New Zealanders were born in NZ or have become New Zealanders after decades of living here and legally making such a declaration.

We are New Zealanders and we are the ones that are hurt most by daily rhetoric that we are not welcome in our (sometimes only) homeland, we have to leave the country we were born into (or chose to make a permanent home in), and are loyal to.

Peters claims to stand up for "the politics of New Zealand" and its "democracy".

But how much do his comments really represent Aotearoa OR its democratic values?

✅ In the real world, overseas-born Kiwis have made up a sizeable proportion of our nation's population for almost 200 years. In fact, many of NZ's most prominent names in film, sports and politics immigrated here from other places before calling our country home.

In a "democracy", these people deserve to be represented.

How proud are we that Aotearoa can claim these firsts?! ⬇️

🌿 Sarpreet Singh is from Auckland and his family ran a grocery store.

“I’m from a very typical Punjabi family with a lot of uncles and aunties and cousins." Singh told Sportstar.

On being the first Sikh player at a FIFA world cup, he said: “I was aware of it leading up to the first game. It means a lot to me, to my family and to my people."

Singh notably played for Bayern Munich and represented Aotearoa at the Paris Olympics.

🌿 Elijah Just is from Palmerston North and is of Chinese ancestry. He made headlines this week by scoring NZ's first ever brace (two goals) in the opener against Iran.

He plays for Scottish Premiership club Motherwell and represented Aotearoa at the Tokyo Olympics.

Watch them tomorrow at 1pm NZT in their second group match!!

Two goals to Elijah Just help the All Whites to a 2-2 draw with Iran at the FIFA World Cup 🌿🖤

Just is of Chinese descent through his mother, and is one of two Asian Aotearoans who represented our nation today (alongside Auckland’s Sarpreet Singh who also put in a solid 92 minute shift) 🏆

This week, Paul Goldsmith (Minster for Media and Communications) announced the Government’s plan to disband the Broadcasting Standards Authority without replacement.

This is terrible news for all of our minority communities, who are currently shielded from slander from major broadcasters in NZ.

Enforced by the BSA, our current Broadcasting Standards protect the NZ public from misinformation and prejudice:

➡️ Standard 4 states that broadcast content should not encourage discrimination against (or denigration of) any ethnic group.

❌ If this is repealed, media outlets will be free to publish content denigrating Māori, Indians, Chinese people etc.

➡️ Standard 5 states that broadcast content on controversial issues of public importance must present balanced viewpoints (unless the audience can be reasonably expected to be already aware of other significant viewpoints).

❌ If this is repealed, media outlets will be free to ONLY present critical or derogatory viewpoints of ethnic communities, without balance. In other words, it will allow large, profit-driven media corporations to post racist propaganda, fuelling hatred and division for clicks and views (as already happens overseas).

➡️ Standard 6 states that broadcasters must make all reasonable efforts to ensure all news/current affairs media is accurate and does not mislead the audience.

❌ If this is repealed, media outlets will be allowed to straight up lie to us. Media won’t even need to be sharing factual information – they will be able to manufacture stories based on little or no evidence, which often results in making inflammatory content about minority communities.

Paul Goldsmith claims that the BSA is not needed, as the industry can “self-regulate”.

This is clearly not true.

We already know that media has a profit incentive to sow division and hatred, as making people angry keeps them engaged. Very few private broadcasters would voluntarily choose accuracy and social responsibility over maximising engagement, which is why we currently regulate them to.

Supporters of the repeal will call the abolishment of the BSA a win for "free speech". In reality, the only new speech that has been enabled is the ability to misinform the public and publish denigrating content about minorities (alongside promote crime or harmful content to children). Everything else was already allowed (the BSA already sets a pretty high bar for breaches: https://www.bsa.govt.nz/broadcasting-standards/broadcasting-code-book-2022/the-codebook/)

In short, this move to scrap the BSA will benefit a small handful of businesses, at the expense of all of our minority communities and our nation’s social cohesion.

Last week, we opposed the English Language Bill at Parliament’s Select Committee.

This Bill is not just useless, it’s actively harmful. Making English an official language here would:

1️⃣ threaten te reo Māori’s relative protections,

2️⃣ marginalise Aotearoa’s Asian communities, and

3️⃣ be a step backwards for positive patriotism and pride in our country’s unique national identity.

Thank you to everyone who wrote to Select Committee – you have no doubt helped make our Government stop and take notice of the dangers it poses to Māori and Asian communities.

Stay tuned for guidance on how we can STOP this Bill at its second reading 💚

STOP THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE BILL ❌🇬🇧

➡️ Click the link in our bio to make a submission to Select Committee 🔗

➡️ Contact your MP and tell them to you hope they’ll vote the Bill down at Second Reading.

We need to let our Government know that we’re proud of our unique and inclusive culture and we oppose the ongoing colonisation of Aotearoa 🖤

Part 4! The kūmara was almost wiped out. 🍠 Kūmara has long been important in Māori culture as a staple food crop. Its successful growth in Aotearoa required sophisticated gardening practices, and kūmara cultivation became closely tied to seasonal cycles, community cooperation, and traditional knowledge passed down through generations.

Unfortunately, a bout of black rot in the 1950s caused concern among farmers. Joe and Fay Gock’s gift of their disease-resistant variety shows yet another example of the interweaving stories of Asian and Māori co-operation on this whenua.
