PIF was proud to represent New Zealand at in New York, joining 56 global NGOs from 30 countries at this annual international gathering focused on advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
Dr. Melissa Derby, Race Relations Commissioner, Te Kāhui Tika Tangata Human Rights Commission, represented Aotearoa New Zealand at and spoke at Panel 2 on “Strategies and initiatives that promote dialogue, empathy, and common purpose across divides.”
The High-Level Reception at the SDGs 2026 welcomed several esteemed guests, including Mr. Anthony Simpson, Deputy Permanent Representative of New Zealand's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, who delivered a speech during the event.
Ms. Pauline Cornwell, Co-Chair of the PIF Advisory Board, also had the opportunity to address the reception, representing PIF and New Zealand.
During the New York visit, the New Zealand delegation was warmly hosted by Mr. Simpson at the Permanent Mission of New Zealand to the United Nations, providing an opportunity for further engagement and exchange.

Are you joining us? Come along and be part of this meaningful walk for peace and unity. 🙌

Commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Peace On Monday 21 st September 2026.

On this special day we invite you to join with others from your community for a peaceful and purposeful walk up Maungawhau /Mt Eden, - a place of natural beauty and cultural significance. Together we will honour the spirit of peace unity and shared humanity.

The theme for 2026 is
"Peace for Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day"

This aims to remind us that peace is shaped by daily choices, and our everyday actions… and to honour the local actions that build lasting stability from the ground up.

The idea of an International Day for Peace was brought to the United Nations in 1981. Following two decades of concern about the tragic poverty of some countries dependent on food aid, while military spending expanded, the aim was to strengthen the idea of peace and to build a fairer world across all nations. A broader goal, added as the 21 st Century opened, was to urge a bare 24 hour cessation of hostilities and global ceasefire so that relief workers may bring food and medical aid to those in war zones.

This gathering is open to all – people of every faith and background and walk of life. As we walk side by side, we may reflect on what peace means in our own lives, in our communities, and in the world. To preserve the spirit of unity and respect we kindly ask that participants refrain from bringing flags, political banners, or promotional material. This is a space for reflection, connection and shared hope – beyond borders and beyond beliefs.

Let this walk be a reminder that peace begins with us – our thoughts, our words, our actions.

PIF organised an informative session on 4th September, providing an overview of the 2026 General Election, key changes introduced this year, and the support available at voting places.

The session was particularly helpful for migrant families in our community, providing useful information and helping participants feel more confident about taking part in the electoral process.

A sincere thank you to Jessica Wang, Community Engagement Advisor at the Electoral Commission NZ and the team, for facilitating the session and sharing her valuable knowledge with our community.

PIF hosted a warm and welcoming dinner gathering on 3rd September with friends connected through the Asylum Seekers Support Trust creating an opportunity to connect, build networks, and become more familiar with the wider community.

With food, music, and meaningful conversations, the evening brought people together and created new connections across diverse backgrounds.
