Lauren from Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington has just completed a 5-month remote internship with us. She's been our comms all-rounder, supporting the spread of our work to Waiheke and beyond in her own creative and strategic way.
Here is Lauren's story:
''Before starting my internship with Waiheke Resources Trust, I knew I loved studying communication and marketing, but I wasnโt entirely sure where I wanted it to take me. Iโve always had a strong passion for the outdoors, marine environments, and conservation in New Zealand, but I wasnโt sure how I could bring these interests together with my future career. Over the past five months, WRT has helped me discover how I can do just that.
With the support of Aya and Livnรฉ, Iโve had the opportunity to work on a range of projects that have allowed me to put my marketing and communication skills into practice. From creating communications for community planting days, bringing campaigns and events to life, and developing content and strategy documents for Plastic Free July, to more recently contributing to the Walk Your Stream campaign, Iโve had the opportunity to develop a communications strategy, design a form to encourage citizen science, and create a scavenger hunt to get tamariki involved as the future kaitiaki of our environment. The campaign aimed to encourage people to connect with the waterways around them and develop a greater understanding of the environments they are part of.
Every project has given me the opportunity to apply the skills Iโve learned throughout my degree while also learning something new.
One of the most rewarding parts of my internship has been seeing how storytelling and communication can turn awareness into action. It has shown me that marketing isnโt just about promoting something; it can be a powerful way to connect people with the places they care about, encourage communities to get involved, and inspire meaningful environmental action.''
