A wrap on 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 with Every Bite !

We want to say a huge thank you to EveryBite, all the incredible local businesses and community members who got involved throughout last month. Together, we celebrated food, shared knowledge, and inspired simple changes that can make a big difference in reducing food waste 💪

🌿 We are planting at Matietie Headland and 𝘄𝗲'𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁!

WRT is hosting a Community Planting Day at Mataiatia Headland, a place of ecological and cultural significance. Every person on the ferry sees this hillside, and you can watch the trees you plant growing 🌱

This whenua also needs urgent support. As our Restoration Manager, Kym explains:
"This is a very high-risk area for slips, and no trees are holding it, so we're prioritising it. Any slips that occur here generally flush into the ocean and onto the sea floor."

Come help us change that, together💪

WRT'sCommunity Planting Day at Rangihoua was a resounding success, with around 𝟰𝟬 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 (at peak, in total) turning out to plant approximately 𝟲𝟬𝟬+ 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 at Rangihoua 🌱

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱'𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿?

Last month, WRT's Zoe and Kristin led the annual 𝗛𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗸𝗶 𝗚𝘂𝗹𝗳 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗛𝘂𝗶, bringing together community organisations, councils, and island communities from across the Gulf to share knowledge, connect, and collaborate.

The first day included a 𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗛𝘂𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗮 around Waiheke, followed by visits to the Transfer Station and Island Waste Collective. Keith shared insights into resource recovery on the island and provided an overview of new waste-processing infrastructure currently being developed.

On the second day, the group travelled to Rakino Island. We were joined by Waiheke Local Board Chair Kylee, Auckland Council's WasteWise Contract Manager Nicola, representatives from WRT's Love Our Wetlands, Waiheke Waterways Project, Rob from Gulf Tree, Whakaaro and other community organisations from across the Gulf.

The day included a tour of Rakino's waste management system, discussions about future opportunities and improvements, eDNA testing, and a visit to the island nursery, where John shared the work being done to support local restoration efforts.

This hui was a great reminder that we are stronger when we share knowledge, learn from each other, and work together toward a healthier Hauraki Gulf | Tīkapa Moana.

Thank you to Auckland Council, the Waiheke Local Board, the Rakino community, and everyone who contributed to making the hui possible.
