North Harbour Community Patrol

North Harbour Community Patrol North Harbour Community Patrol, trained volunteers working with Police keeping communities safe.

North Harbour Community Patrol cover all suburbs of the North Shore to reduce crime and build safer communities. Free training is given to patrollers who volunteer for one or two 4 hour night patrols a month, or day patrols. Applicants must be over 18 years of age, have a full clean drivers licence, pass the police vetting, complete application forms, supply several forms of ID and pass a personal

interview. All our instructions come from our close relationship with the police, both as a national group (CPNZ - Community Patrols NZ) and as a local North Shore group based at the Waitemata East Policing Centre.

Important to know...

NZ Civil Defence are testing the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system on Sunday 14 June, between 6-7pm ⚠️📲

If you have a hidden second phone for your safety, we recommend turning it off or putting it in flight mode for the duration of the test (6-7pm on Sunday 14 June) to ensure it’s not discovered when the nationwide Emergency Mobile Alert is sent.

Some mobile devices set to silent mode will still emit a sound when the Emergency Mobile Alert test is sent, so switching to flight mode or turning off your device is the only way to avoid the loud sound of the alert.

You can find more information about the Emergency Mobile Alert system, including a factsheet and list of FAQs at 🚨 https://getready.govt.nz/en/prepared/ema

MYTH vs REALITY: North Harbour Community Patrol

Many people see our patrol vehicles around the North Shore, but not everyone understands what we do. Let's separate FACT from FICTION.

🔸 MYTH: "Community Patrol members are just volunteer police officers."
🔹 REALITY: We are not Police officers and we don't have Police powers. Our role is to observe, record, and report information directly to Police in real time. We are the extra eyes and ears that help keep our community safe.

🔸 MYTH: "Patrollers are just ‘wanna-be cops’."
🔹 REALITY: Our volunteers are not trying to replace Police - we support them. Community Patrol is about service, not authority. It’s about being present, observant, and responsible, and passing on accurate information so the right agencies can respond appropriately.

🔸 MYTH: "Community Patrols confront offenders."
🔹 REALITY: Safety comes first. Our volunteers are trained to observe and report, not intervene. We focus on gathering accurate information and ensuring it reaches the appropriate emergency services.

🔸 MYTH: "Driving around doesn't make a difference."
🔹 REALITY: A visible patrol presence can deter anti-social behaviour, vandalism, and opportunistic crime. More importantly, the information we report helps Police build intelligence and respond more effectively.

🔸 MYTH: "Community Patrol only works at night."
🔹 REALITY: North Harbour Community Patrol operates both day and night, attends community events, supports emergency services when required, and patrols across the North Shore.

🔸 MYTH: "The patrol is funded by the government."
🔹 REALITY: We are a charitable organisation powered by volunteers and supported through sponsorships, grants, and community donations.

🔸 MYTH: "Patrollers are all old, retired people - what are they going to do?"
🔹 REALITY: Our patrol is made up of people from all walks of life - working professionals, parents, students, and retirees. What matters isn’t age, its awareness, communication, and sound judgement.

🔸 MYTH: "What difference are they making anyway?"
🔹 REALITY: The impact is often unseen but real. Patrols support Police with timely information, increase visible deterrence in key areas, and provide reassurance to the public during vulnerable moments. All patroller reports, when combined, help build a clearer picture of what is happening across the community.

🔸 MYTH: "One volunteer can't make a difference."
🔹 REALITY: Every patrol adds another set of eyes and ears. Together, our volunteers contribute thousands of hours each year helping to create safer neighbourhoods across the North Shore.

💙 Our mission is simple: Observe. Report. Reassure. Support.

Together with Police, emergency services, local organisations, and residents, we’re helping build a safer North Shore for everyone.

If you’ve ever wondered how you can contribute to community safety, sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply pay attention and report what you see.

💙 A little support goes a long way for your local Community Patrol

North Harbour Community Patrol is completely self‑funded, and every kilometre we drive, every hour we volunteer, and every watchful pair of eyes on the road is made possible by the generosity of our community.

Our volunteers give freely of their time — but like any organisation, we still have operational costs to cover. Fuel, vehicle maintenance, communications, uniforms, and training don’t come to us for free, and we rely on community support to keep doing the work we do.

If you value having an extra layer of safety on our streets, we’d be incredibly grateful for your support through our Givealittle campaign. Every donation, big or small, helps keep us out on patrol and keeping our community safe.

If you’re able to help, please do. Your support genuinely keeps us rolling.

Thank you for backing the volunteers who quietly look out for our neighbourhood.

PLEASE BE AWARE

Police are urging members of the public to be aware of an online scam targeting people interested in attending fitness sessions in Auckland.

Victims have reported seeing Tai Chi classes being advertised on Facebook and asking them to register their interest.

After completing the online form the victims are contacted, usually via WhatsApp, and being instructed to download an app which is claimed to be used to book classes.

Once downloaded this app allows the scammers to access the victims bank accounts.
Multiple victims have reported losing large sums of money.

Police are advising the public to be aware of this scam and to not engage with anyone over WhatsApp about downloading apps onto their phone.

Anyone who would like to report an instance of this occurring or has information about those responsible is asked to update Police online now or call 105 using the reference number 260527/5473.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

North Harbour Community Patrol would like to give a MASSIVE SHOUT‑OUT to Harvey Norman New Zealand for their generous donation of two iPads to our Patrol.

As a volunteer organisation, this upgrade from pen‑and‑paper reporting to digital tablets is a huge step forward. This technology allows our patrollers to submit reports instantly, meaning less time on administration and more time out on the road, keeping our wider community safe.

We will, of course, continue to patrol in the Wairau Park area — including your retail store — as part of our regular coverage.

From all of us at NHCP, THANK YOU for your support. Your generosity genuinely makes a difference to the safety of our community.
