Suicide Reduction Trust

Suicide Reduction Trust SRT is a not-for-profit charity focused on reducing su***de in New Zealand. We've had enough!

There is WAY too much su***de in Aotearoa, across young ones (down to 10 years old) all the way through to the oldies (ha, not mentioning anything specific here). We have developed 5 very cutting edge and modern initiatives that when rolled out is really going to strengthen our community and provide us much more resilience. As you can't ever get Government funding quickly enough we've opted to str

aight to a self-funding model by raffling luxury prizes on a bi-monthly basis via www.WinAHouse.co.nz. Please support to raise the funds (by sharing this with your whānau and community), then support us by sharing our resources with those you think might benefit. It takes a village to raise a child, and a community to keep them safe at all times! We welcome approaches from all who think they can work collaboratively with us to better progress this cause.

NEW ZEALAND IS CRUMBLING

(Not a good look on the world stage)

3 major protests, all on the same matter, within 18 months in Aotearoa!

Why would 3 otherwise sensible and educated people think there was no other choice but to go public on this issue?

We have one of the highest youth su***de rates in the OECD.

In 2022 (latest figures) there were 174 deaths from road crashes (source: https://www.transport.govt.nz/statistics-and-insights/safety-road-deaths) but 557 from su***de (source: https://tewhatuora.shinyapps.io/su***de-web-tool/).

26.03% were Māori (despite Māori only accounting for 17.77% of the population (source: 2023 Census).

$2.9bn was spent (admittedly stopped now) 2021-2024 on the NZTA “Road to Zero” (for the 174 deaths)
(source: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/planning-and-investment/national-land-transport-programme/2021-24-nltp/activity-classes/road-to-zero/ #:~:text=Road%20to%20Zero%20is%20a,Zero%20activities%20throughout%20New%20Zealand.).

How does that compare with $600k for each of Gumboot Friday and Mates in Construction?

But money won’t fix this problem.

No matter how much counselling you provide, the root cause is still going to be there.

We need to fund self-awareness, (importantly) self-acceptance (ie ‘resilience’), and addressing the root cause.

The recent $10m budget allocation, with 25% ($2.5m) on “prevention”, is going to be frittered away, as we can show holding a BBQ will improve mental health, and get funding for it (without any lasting benefit).

A GOVERNMENT THAT DOES NOT PERFORM SHOULD BE FIRED

If the CEO of a private company did something (or failed to do something) that could cause a ship to hit the rocks the Board would sack them without hesitation.

Christopher Luxon is doing a good job in this respect (see Kāinga Ora and Kiwi Rail).

Simeon Brown MP is also doing a good job. It makes no sense to cause traffic to drive at 20kmph in the middle of the night, but it does when little kids are around (variable speed limits). He should not be criticized for a lack of consultation as what is needed is too obvious and it should not be slowed down unnecessarily.

On the other hand, we’re NOT doing a good job in mental health (Matt Doocey MP).

Arguably there should not be any blame for this, as the solution is complex.

While we should fund some counselling and ‘coping’ programmes, this should not be the focus (as they’re a band aid that does not break the cycle).

The issues causing poor mental health are modern stresses (money, employment, relationships and social media) (not counting medical psychological illness or addiction).

If the Government funded increased self-awareness and self-acceptance initiatives there would be greater resilience in the community (seeing the problem for what it is and not blaming ourselves).

Funding that goes towards the root problems (budgeting, vocational, relationships) would also improve mental health (as these things would drag us down less).

The Su***de Prevention Office operated on a $3.5m/year budget from 2019 to 2024 ($17.5m), created a Long-Term Plan (that no-one appears to know about or be implementing) but who also funded the LifeKeepers programmes (has anyone been on one of these and received any carry forward benefit from it?) or from the Aoake te Rā progamme?

No disrespect to the people that created the plan or of the very best of intentions that it work, but the results are not there.

In order to achieve results we need to do a different input to have any chance at a different outcome.

In March 2023 a young lady (Janae) had a serious mental health episode, was taken in the Police car, to hospital, then released. Is she still alive today? https://youtu.be/lhJk-HmF8wc

The WHO patient ratio for mental health is 1:14,000. Prior to 2023 there were 60,0000 people on the Kapit Coast with 3 staff, then there were 2, then there was only 1 (Professor Bismark). Professor Bismark did a lone protest on the side of the road – no progress (https://bit.ly/3XS3SaV). She asked for a Panic Alarm – denied. She then quit (now there are NO psychiatrists in the area). https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7214849055129026560/

PRESS RELEASE

It is with deep regret that the Board announces it needs to cancel this raffle due to insufficient public interest.

Please allow a short amount of time for all purchases to be refunded back to your original card through Stripe.

Dave Jaques is in charge of the Complaints Department. Please direct all communication to him via [email protected] and we will resolve all of your concerns to your satisfaction as soon as possible.

As a Board we have put a LARGE amount of effort into creating something that would generate enough funds to then be able to implement the 5 initiatives planned on our website (www.Su***deReductionTrust.org.nz) and it is a shame this did not work out.

Because we believe so deeply about this cause (the very reason SRT was created) we will not be ‘closing down and giving up’ (otherwise why start?), but it may take us some time to work through the $650,000.00 we have spent on compliance and marketing to date (with nothing to show for it).

At the moment, our most likely path will be to progress the AI Supporter and HELP Toolbox and release them to the public for feedback before looking to be involved in any other initiatives.

The Board would like to deeply thank all those that have supported us along the way and we hope you do not feel that your support was misplaced.
