We've been in our production season for a few weeks now here in the nursery. Our big automated machine is running almost all day alongside our smaller flat filler. Our big machine (pictured in the video) is useful for doing our hardy crops that we need hundreds of thousands of, such as kānuka and mānuka, while our flat filler is better for species that need a more delicate hand or our larger grow on lines.

This will be our second season with the big machine, with last season allowing us to iron out any kinks we discovered along the way. It's now running smoothly, with todays total already over 15500 plants! When running smoothly, the machine only needs one person to operate it, meaning that we can focus more of our efforts on the more fiddly crops, biosecurity, and crop monitoring.

Needless to say potting season is off to a good start. 👍

While working out on Tawharanui Regional Park's South Coast our team spotted this beautiful stingray cruising through the shallows. If you know South Coast you'd know the removal of invasive plants through this steep coastal bush is hard mahi so sights like this are super rewarding!

Thanks for the video Callum Dickinson.

In the final post of our 21st birthday series, we’re celebrating perhaps the biggest change of all — the growth of the Scrub team.

From “Mum’s little helper” to a crew of 35–40, our team has come a long way! Over the years, we’ve been lucky to work with so many great people, and we want to take this chance to thank every one of you for the part you played in Scrub’s journey — we couldn’t have done it without you. 💚

To current and past crew please post more team photos in the comments and tag old team mates.

In our “Before and After 21st” series, we’ve been talking about growth and change — but some things haven’t changed. From day one, we’ve been committed to ecosourcing, and that’s still at the heart of what we do. The work looks much the same too: fun days foraging in the field, followed by plenty of fiddly seed cleaning and processing. Our seed registration system is also still the backbone of our traceability — just upgraded from notebooks and handwritten labels to a database and QR codes.

Next up in our 21st before and after series - the evolution of the potting shed.
Our first few years were spent potting up under a basic roof structure in the back yard. Potting mix was stored in a nearby pile and shovelled onto the table. From there we hand filled and pricked out seedlings into PB3/4 bags.
In 2008/9 we upgraded to a potting shed (under construction in the background of the first image) with a basic potting machine and trayfiller.
Then in 2020 we moved into our new plant production facility and introduced our fully automated transplant line.
In the meantime the original site of the potting shed has been planted up with natives grown from seed in the nursery (classic before and after photo).

Then and now part two - propagation facilities.
The original prop house was an ingenious design, with roll up covers allowing it to double as a shade house, or a hardening off area for seedlings. Rodney constructed this in the back yard, and we produced thousands of seedlings in this basic structure.
Today's prop house and shade house serve the same purpose, they're just a bit bigger.

This month at Scrub marks our 21st birthday! A big milestone like this gives us a chance to look back on the journey, reflect on our origin and celebrate the growth and success these years have bought.
We all know that ecologists love a good photo point, so over the next few days we will be posting a series of then v's now posts so we can share some of the journey.

We love being involved with projects from start to finish, with this particular project coming across our desks in 2023. Our ecologists were able to work with the client and Auckland Council to prepare detailed plans to ensure that the overall environmental impact was minimised. While physical works are completed the project now moves into a monitoring and maintenance phase. A big thanks to Ecology New Zealand for collaboration with this one!

🌿 The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago — the next best time is TODAY! 🌱

Our team is planting 3,000 native plants on a local lifestyle block right next to an area where we planted 30,000 back in 2010. It’s inspiring to see how, 15 years on, the first colonizing species are gracefully making way for a rich and diverse understory.

This is nature doing what it does best — natural succession in action — creating healthy, resilient ecosystems that support wildlife and bring life back to the land.

If you own or manage rural land, planting natives now can kickstart these natural processes, improve biodiversity, and contribute to the long-term health of your property.

Get in touch with the Scrub team if you need advice, or native plants for your revegetation project.
