When you buy from someone via an online trading site, your consumer rights will depend on:
• whether the seller is a professional trader, and
• whether the seller is based in New Zealand (this includes if they are not based in New Zealand but have a base in New Zealand).

❄️🌡 If you’re struggling to pay your power bill, you should contact your energy provider as soon as you can. Energy providers must follow consumer care obligations, which include working with you to keep your energy supply affordable. Your provider can work out a payment plan with you, so that your credit rating isn’t affected.

If you receive a benefit, are on a low income or have extra costs because you have a disability, you may be eligible for some financial assistance to help pay your power, gas and water bills.

You might also be able to save money on your power bills by switching to a different plan or provider or through things you can do at home to safely reduce your power consumption.

🏅🏅 Citizens Advice Bureau was recently named Favourite Free Advisory Service at the 2026 MoneyHub Editor's Choice Awards!

CAB answers hundreds of thousands of calls for assistance and support from the public every year - in person, by freephone and online.

We assist people across a huge range of issues, including tenancy, employment, relationships, immigration, consumer, justice, and more.

The team at MoneyHub routinely refers their users on to CAB, knowing they will be in good hands.

“We were thrilled to have the work of our organisation recognised in this way, particularly the amazing mahi of all our volunteers”, says CABNZ Chief Executive Kerry Dalton.
