Something special has appeared in our Regional Cancer Centre | Te Pūriri o Te Ora at Auckland City Hospital. 💚

Our new wall decal opposite the Radiation Therapy Reception (level 4) features real words of gratitude from patients and whānau for our Radiotherapy team.

This message (one of countless received) says it all: "Your generosity and compassion have made a significant impact on our lives."

The wall's purpose is to celebrate the impact this incredible team makes on people's lives, during their toughest times, and bring an extra moment of warmth to patients and whānau.

But what makes this wall truly unique? One side is made of felt, making it our first interactive wall, where staff can pin cards and notes they receive, so it becomes an evolving tribute to all who pass through our doors. 💙

Pictured on the wall are two very special people, Crisley and Michael, who hold deep appreciation for the care they received at Te Pūriri o Te Ora. Their stories capture exactly what this place means to those who are treated here – the region’s only public radiation therapy provider.

💚 “Mum wanted to help dialysis patients become freer to see family and travel, so she kindly left a gift to the Dialysis team. She wished to help kick-start a project, which we hope to see benefit all future patients.”

Some gifts keep giving long after we're gone, and Pat's story is one shining example.

Pat Massey spent years as a dialysis patient at Auckland City Hospital - a treatment she described as "like having a part-time job."

Pat’s son, Simon Massey, says the care his mum received from the Dialysis team meant she enjoyed many years of joy. “From watching her grandchildren grow and graduate from universities, to watching them marry, and seeing great-grandchildren be born; she was able to watch her fourth generation family expand.”

When Pat passed away, she left a generous gift in her Will to help give future dialysis patients more freedom - to see family, to travel, to live more fully.

Simon says it best: "We'll never forget the dialysis team. They are a second family to us all." Pat's legacy lives on in every dialysis patient who gets a little more freedom, a little more time, a little more life.

A bequest to Auckland Hospital Foundation - no matter the size - can be directed to where it matters most to you. A specific department, a fund, or wherever the need is greatest.

Notice anything different about our incredible hospital volunteers lately? 👀

Well, we're excited to see all 300+ volunteers in action, wearing our new Auckland Hospital Foundation vests!

These generous people give their time to support patients and whānau – showing up every day for those going through some of the most challenging times of their lives.

💜 The new vests are bright purple, with our logo, so you can easily spot those in our hospital who are there to guide, support, and comfort you. The vests also represent how volunteers, like our donors and fundraisers, help us go beyond what government funding alone can provide.

By offering their compassion, skills, and energy, our volunteers play a vital role in the hospital's wraparound service. Their dedication, kindness, and calm presence make a real difference to people when they need it most.

Thank you to all our volunteers – for enhancing the care of patients and whānau at Auckland City Hospital, Greenlane Clinical Centre, and beyond. 💫

There are only two clinicians in New Zealand who perform cardiac lead extraction. Both work at Auckland City Hospital. 🫀

We go behind the scenes with Dr Nigel Lever and Dr Andrew Martin — specialist cardiologists leading New Zealand's only cardiac lead extraction service — who share the nationwide impact of their work and where donations could make a real difference.

When a pacemaker or defibrillator develops an infection or fails, patients from across the country are referred to their team. Untreated, device-related infection carries a mortality risk of nearly 90%. With lead extraction, that drops to around 10–20%.

"The best part is the people and working with cardiologists across the country... Helping patients recover and improve is incredibly rewarding." – Dr Andrew Martin

If you've ever wondered what it takes to run a world-class cardiac service, or if you care about heart health in Aotearoa, have a read of this interview👇

Freshly baked scone, anyone? 👩‍🍳

Sweet aromas of home baking fill Ward 51 | Taiao Ora when stroke patients come together for our Baking Therapy Group – a special part of their rehabilitation.

Run by passionate therapy assistants like Patricia Colle Dos Santos, the Baking Therapy Group is interactive, engaging, fun, and hugely beneficial to patients’ recovery.

Scones were on the menu last week, with patients David and Anita enjoying the social time, getting therapeutic benefits, and savouring their tasty goods!

Stroke patient Paul Harvey, who has fundraised over $80,000 for Auckland City Hospital Stroke Services, discovered the Baking Therapy Group during his time on the stroke ward in 2018: “Not only did my therapists teach me skills to compensate for my arm weakness, but I also got to know other patients on the ward, and we’d always have a much-needed laugh.

"My relationships with staff and other patients were so important in helping me stay positive and upbeat during some tough times, and I’m so grateful to them all.”

When Paul was strong enough to go home, he was already thinking about how he could make a difference. By reaching out to his generous networks, Paul secured an ongoing donation of baking ingredients. And the result? Delicious!

Patricia says, "We at Ward 51 are very grateful for Paul’s amazing support towards the Baking Group." ♥️

The Baking Therapy Group is just one example of how supporters like Paul help us enhance the experience for patients and whānau at Auckland City Hospital. See more examples here 👉 https://ahf.org.nz/enhancing-the-patient-whanau-experience/

Today is International Nurses Day so we're celebrating the incredible nurses at Auckland City Hospital and across Aotearoa. 🫶

Behind every patient in our hospital is a nurse who cares for them. From supporting patients at all hours, to helping families through life’s hardest moments, nurses are the heart of healthcare.

At Auckland City Hospital, our nursing teams look after some of New Zealand's most critical patients. Their expertise, dedication, and compassion are extraordinary.

With a worldwide shortage of nurses, growing our locally-trained workforce has never been more important. Our Rise scholarships help passionate aspiring nurses overcome financial barriers and step into the careers they were destined to fulfill. Together, we can make it possible.

Meet Varsha Asrani, Advanced Clinician Dietitian in Critical Care at Auckland City Hospital.

We sat down with Varsha to learn about a piece of equipment that's making a real difference for critically ill patients — the Calorimeter Device.

This piece of technology measures a patient's energy expenditure and metabolic rate, allowing critical care teams to create tailored nutrition and treatment plans for each individual — whether they're in critical care or on the road to recovery 🌱

Because no two patients are the same, and the right nutrition at the right time can make all the difference to recovery outcomes.

A huge thank you to Akarana Community Trust for your generous support in making this equipment possible. Your gift is already changing the way our critical care teams care for some of Auckland City Hospital's most vulnerable patients.

Watch the video to find out how the Calorimeter Device is making a real difference for critically ill patients at Auckland City Hospital.

Today we celebrate the incredible midwives at Auckland City Hospital and around the world – on International Day of the Midwife.

Can you imagine a world without midwives?

Our midwifery team at Auckland City Hospital welcomes around 7,000 babies every year. And, as the national centre for complex and high-risk pregnancies and births, our team delivers the safest possible care for mums and babies when it matters most.

This year's global theme – One Million More Midwives – is a powerful reminder of how vital this workforce is. With a worldwide shortage of midwives, it's never been more important to grow our locally-trained workforce here in Aotearoa.

That's why our Rise scholarships exists – helping passionate future midwives and nurses focus on training, without financial pressures holding them back.

To every midwife at Auckland City Hospital and beyond: THANK YOU. You are extraordinary. ✨
