From our whānau to yours, we welcome those from near and far across Tāmaki and Aotearoa to Takaparawhau to share in karakia and waiata for the celebration of Matariki, and to welcome the Māori new year together.

Parking will be available at Grammar-Tec and Akarana Carpark, and on other surrounding public streets. Shuttles will rotate between the carpark and venue from 4.30am and again following the ceremony at 7.30am. Be sure to prepare for the cooler weather and dress warm. Covered shoes are recommended.

Almost 3000 native rakau planted this morning by the local community and whānau! 🌱✨

We had a massive turnout of helping hands that contributed to the restoration mahi our Taiao team, and people before have been a part of. Staying connected to the whenua has always been important to Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and today was an awesome way to share that with wider Tāmaki.

A big thank you to all who came through to our 2026 Matariki Planting Day, and also to Ōrākei Local Board for supporting this kaupapa! E mihi ana ki a koutou katoa! 🌱

Matariki Herenga Waka, Tāmaki Herenga Tangata ✨

Kua tata mai te putanga o Matariki, me te wā o te tau hou Māori. Nau piki mai, tautī mai ki Takaparawhau.

As the stars of Matariki rise, join us for our annual traditional Hautapu ceremony, this years national broadcast — a time to gather, remember those who have passed, and look ahead to the year to come.

This year, under the theme of Matariki Herenga Waka - For Everyone and in partnership with Manatū Taonga, we welcome those from near and far across Tāmaki and Aotearoa to Takaparawhau to share in karakia and waiata for the celebration of Matariki, and to welcome the Māori new year together.

We were proud to stand alongside our Ngāti Whātua nui tonu whānau at Te Kia Ora Marae as our whanaunga and deputy Chair Ngarimu Blair officially takes up his role as Tumu Whakarae for Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara.

He rā ātaahua, he rā whakanuia — a beautiful day to celebrate our Whātuatanga and the journey ahead.
