Did you know coeliac disease can affect your bone health?

When someone with undiagnosed coeliac disease eats gluten, it triggers inflammation that damages the tiny, finger-like villi in the small intestine. These villi are essential for absorbing key bone-building nutrients like calcium and vitamin D.

Without enough of these nutrients, the body may begin "borrowing" calcium from the bones to maintain healthy blood calcium levels. Over time, this can weaken bones.

For wāhine, the risk is even greater. If coeliac disease goes undiagnosed for years, this ongoing calcium loss—combined with the natural decline in bone-protecting estrogen during menopause- can significantly increase the risk of early-onset osteopenia and osteoporosis.

Early diagnosis and a strict gluten-free diet can help protect not only your gut but also your long-term bone health.

If you have ongoing digestive symptoms, unexplained fatigue, iron deficiency, or a family history of coeliac disease, talk to your healthcare provider about getting tested.

Building a Balanced Gluten-Free Meal

Eating well with coeliac disease is about more than just avoiding gluten it’s about nourishing your body with balance and variety.

A simple way to build a healthy meal is to include:
🍗 Protein (such as chicken, fish, eggs, legumes, or tofu)
🌾 Gluten-free wholegrains (like brown rice, quinoa, or buckwheat)
🥕 Plenty of fruit and vegetables for fibre, vitamins, and minerals

This combination helps support energy levels, gut health, and overall wellbeing.

Balanced choices at each meal can make a big difference over time. Aim for colour, variety, and naturally gluten-free foods where possible.

Eat well, live well, and thrive gluten free!

Mānawatia a Matariki!

TomorrowmAotearoa celebrates Matariki, the Māori New Year – a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future.

For many whānau, Matariki is marked by sharing kai and spending time together. As you gather with family, friends, or your community, remember that gluten-free food can be enjoyed by everyone.

Simple steps like providing gluten-free options, avoiding cross-contamination, and clearly labelling dishes help ensure people with coeliac disease can celebrate safely.

From all of us at Coeliac New Zealand, we wish you a joyful and gluten-free Matariki.

Winter is Here: Boost Your Immunity, Gluten-Free Style!

As the chilly winter weather settles across Aotearoa, keeping our immune systems strong is top priority. For those with coeliac disease, maintaining a healthy gut is one of the best ways to support overall immunity, as a large part of our immune system lives right in our digestive tract!

Here are our top gluten-free winter immunity hacks to keep you feeling your best:

🍲 Embrace Warm, Healing Foods: Fill your slow cooker with bone broths, hearty vegetable soups, and stews. Use naturally gluten-free herbs and spices like garlic, ginger, and turmeric, which are packed with anti-inflammatory properties.

🍊 Load Up on Vitamin C & Zinc: Support your body with seasonal produce like kiwifruit, citrus, and leafy greens, alongside zinc-rich foods like lean meats, pumpkin seeds, and legumes.

✨ Prioritise Gut Health: Nurture your villi with gluten-free probiotic foods like unsweetened yoghurt and prebiotic fibres like bananas and leeks.

Remember, staying active and getting plenty of rest are just as vital for keeping winter bugs at bay.
