We've still got so many memories from camp to share!

One of the highlights was Kidney Kids NZ founder Elaine and her daughter Bex joining us to take part in the fun and spend time with our current kidney kids and their whānau.

Elaine started Kidney Kids 36 years ago as a parent support group, after navigating her own journey with two daughters living with kidney conditions. Her vision was to ensure no family had to face a kidney diagnosis without support and information.

It was special to see her at camp, connecting with families and enjoying the weekend alongside the community she helped build 🧡

Today, on World Environment Day, we're giving a huge thank you to Lions Clubs New Zealand, who run the KanTabs recycling initiative, which makes a real difference for our kidney kids.

Check out this photo shared by Oxford & Districts Lions Club of a trailer loaded with 224kg of aluminium cans, ready to be recycled to raise funds for Kidney Kids NZ.

Those little tabs really do add up to something pretty amazing 🧡

We're so grateful to everyone who collects, donates, and supports KanTabs - thank you!

Happy Global Parents Day to all the incredible parents and caregivers of our kidney kids 🧡

The love, strength, and resilience you show every day - through the appointments, the hard news, and everything in between - doesn't go unnoticed. This long weekend, we hope you find a pocket of rest and joy, wherever you are. You deserve it!

A special thank you to our parent volunteers at camp - you give up your time to make camp possible for our kidney kids, and for that, we are so grateful!

At the end of March, 48 of us came together for our annual Kidney Kids Camp - 29 kidney kids and 15 parent helpers travelling from seven regions across Aotearoa, from as far north as Ruawai and as far south as Dunedin, joined by our wonderful Starship nurses Georgie and Nicole, and "the Rachels" from the Kidney Kids NZ team.

During camp, some of our kidney kids and parent helpers took some time to put their thoughts, feelings, and creativity down on paper - and flipping through these pages gives you just a glimpse of the fun we had and how meaningful this camp is for our community. 🧡

Kidney Kids camp wouldn’t have been possible without the support of The Lion Foundation, Pub Charity, and Grassroots Trust. Thank you for your continued support and for helping make camp a truly special experience for our Kidney Kids and their families.

Last Friday was International Day of Families - a day that celebrates the vital role families play in the well-being of communities around the world. Our Kidney Kids whānau is no different - when a child joins our community, so does their whole family. Supporting them is a central part of what we do.

Because of this, each year across seven regions, we host Christmas parties where kidney kids and their whole whānau are welcome - because this journey is one they're on together.

Here are some snapshots of kidney kids and their whānau enjoying time together at our Christmas parties 🧡

Over the weekend, the Auckland Organ Donation Thanksgiving Service was held in recognition of all those connected to organ donation and transplantation.

These services take place across three regions each year, and it's always a deeply moving and reflective gathering - bringing together donor families, recipients, whānau, and healthcare teams to honour the incredible gift of organ and tissue donation.

Hearing the stories shared is both emotional and powerful. Behind every transplant is a story of courage, compassion, and selflessness. For many of our Kidney Kids whānau, this gift is life-changing - it means more time at school, more time at home, more time simply being a child again.

We hold deep gratitude for every donor and their family, whose generosity gives the gift of life - a gift that lives on in every milestone, every smile, and every future made possible.

If you haven't already, we encourage you to have a kōrero with your whānau about organ donation 🧡

Today is World Hypertension Day.

High blood pressure is one of the leading risk factors for kidney disease - and often develops without obvious symptoms. That’s why regular checks are so important, whether you’re living with kidney disease or not.

A simple blood pressure check with your GP or pharmacy can help you stay ahead of your health.

Today is International Day of Families - and it feels like the perfect moment to reflect on what that word really means for our community 🧡

At Kidney Kids, we've always known that when a child is diagnosed with kidney disease, it's never just one person's journey. It's the whole family's. The parents who become advocates overnight. The siblings who adapt without being asked. The grandparents, the aunties and uncles, the friends who show up. The whānau who hold everything together, even when they're running on empty.

Our wraparound model of support exists because of this - because we believe that caring for a kidney kid means caring for everyone around them, too.

This week we've been sharing some of the stories from our families that remind us why this matters - and there are even more stories on our website, each one a testament to the strength and love of the kidney kids and families in our community: kidneykids.org.nz/our-kidney-kids/our-stories/

If you're part of our kidney kids whānau, and you'd like to share your story with us - we would be truly honoured to hear it. Get in touch at [email protected]

This week we've been sharing the stories of some of our incredible kidney kids and their whānau - and today we want to share one more.

Meet Selena 🧡 Before Selena was even born, she was diagnosed with multicystic dysplastic kidney disease - and since then, her mum Alyssa has navigated every step of that journey alongside her daughter. That journey included years of dialysis, countless surgeries, and endless hospital admissions - all before Selena was 5. Then at 1am one September morning, Alyssa's phone rang. They had a kidney for Selena.

A transplant is a life-changing moment, and for Selena it truly has been. More energy, starting school, and a more balanced childhood. But as Alyssa knows, this is not where the journey ends. Kidney disease is a lifelong battle with no cure and Alyssa wishes more people understood that.

Their story captures something that so many kidney kid families know to be true: that this journey is not one you can survive alone. It is only possible with the unwavering support of friends, family, and the people who walk alongside you.

Read Alyssa and Selena's story on our website which is linked in our bio.
