What an amazing show and weekend!

A huge thank you to everyone who exhibited in this year’s Muriwai Arts Exhibition. Your creativity and hard work made for a truly beautiful and cohesive show — you should all be proud of what you presented.

A special thank you to Donna whose energy and commitment continue to drive the exhibition, which began more than 20 years ago at Houghtons Bush Camp.

And a BIG thanks to our supporters and sponsors: Jayne McCall Property, Rollercoaster, The Surf Club at Muriwai, and Creative New Zealand. We couldn’t have made it without you.

What a beautiful evening filling our surf club with waiata and film.

Thank you everyone who showed up to support Muriwai Arts and Waimauku School’s kapa haka rōpu. And thanks to the group themselves for coming and performing even after a huge day at Kaipara festival 🥹

A big shout out to for putting on this incredible event every two years, the contribution to the community is insurmountable.

Our last day to walk through the wonderful showcase of art is today, Sunday 19th Oct. we’re open from 10-5pm.

And we wish everyone the best of luck who is competing in the Muriwai Marathon today!! See you at the finish line for some kai (food trucks are back down here today).

Artist Profile: Nico Harrison (5th generation Muriwai!)

“My painting practice draws inspiration from tribal patterns, masks, and Persian rug designs. The bold geometric shapes and earthy tones give me a strong foundation to work from. I mix elements from these different sources, reshaping them into my own motifs to create something unexpected and new.

I’m exploring imperfection—disrupting patterns, distorting forms, and challenging ideas of correctness and perfection. I love working on a large scale, blending figurative symbols with an abstract drawing style. Layering mixed media paints and pastels helps me build depth and space.”

🏆 Nico Harrison is the winner of the Kumeu Arts Youth Award 2024 and the Helensville Arts Youth Award 2024.

See his work in the flesh at Muriwai Arts exhibition at the surf club all weekend!

🎨 Featured Artist: Amanda Kemp

Amanda has worked as an artist in both Aotearoa and Europe, refining her craft over three decades and mastering multiple mediums. 🌍✨

Specialising in hand-built ceramic sculpture, often in the form of stunning wall installations, Amanda’s process is intuitive and energy-based. Working in what she calls a state of “no mind”, she lets the work emerge organically, guided by feeling rather than concept.

With deep respect for the integrity of making, she believes each piece can he mau pūngao - hold energy. 🔥🌿💧 She works with natural materials such as wild clay and oxides, embracing elemental processes that honour fire, earth, and water.

Amanda’s practice is rooted in her whenua, exploring the balance between light and shadow in our shared human experience.

Ruku i te pō, ruku i te ao.
Delve into the dark, emerge in the light. 🌕

Catch her work alongside many other local talents this coming weekend at Muriwai Arts - info in our bio link

🎨 Artist of the Week: Mark Grocott

Born and raised in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton), Mark has been training in toi whakairo at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa since 2021.

Of Ngāti Kahungunu and Pākehā ancestry, Mark’s work explores the meeting point between traditional whakairo forms and contemporary art practice. His carvings and designs speak to both heritage and evolution — honouring the old while shaping something distinctly of today.

Mark’s creative journey is deeply grounded in the restoration and conservation work at his marae, Takitimu Te Waihirere in Wairoa — a space where art, history, and community continually intertwine.
