Listen to Dylan & Carl blab on bfm this morning?

The boys from Loop Group, Carl & Dylan, are in the studio on a bittersweet note as their beloved makers space is about to be turned into a carpark. TL;DR: Some capitalists are turning Loop Groop into a carpark so now everything is free.

In the last 3 years, Loop Groop has diverted and repaired hundreds of bicycles, got hundreds of people back on two wheels and has lurked around with a confusing counter-narrative of openness, sharing and circularity in a mass-consumption businessworld. Now, the yet-unstoppable force of property development has found us. The land we’re on has been purchased by some capitalists who are bringing in the diggers, fencing the section, filling it with smashed concrete and turning it into a carpark in pursuit of a commercial return. We have to be out by July 1st.

In our time, we have accrued a lot of stuff, and we’d really like to move it off the site in a way that’s not putting it in the ground. It’s mainly bikes. Most of them need some love to get going but many are total gems. If you’ve ever thought of coming to get a bike, you have two weeks. Also now they don’t cost any money so that’s a plus.

We'll be open our usual 12-4 for the next 2 Saturdays and additionally this Friday (the 21st) from 12-4.

It’s been a hell of a ride.
Here’s to death and rebirth.
xx

Ross of Bike Auckland has been Building His Own Bike with us :)

Our apartment building had a problem: abandoned bikes. Deep in the basement carpark there were loads of them, all flat tyres and thickly layered dust. The miserable things, long since forgotten by their owners, clogged up the bike racks and spilled into the access way. They had to go. But where? Whe...

"Amidst a climate of excess and over-consumption, Loop Groop is a sovereign island in a seemingly uncaring ocean of sociopathic enterprise."

In a DIY shed in Auckland's Mt Eden a co-op exists making bikes available at low or no cost.
