Auckland UNESCO City of Music
Tāmaki Makaurau UNESCO Pā Puoro
ABOUT
Auckland became a designated City of Music in 2017, joining the UNESCO Creative City Network of nearly 200 cities around the world.
The Creative Cities Network links Auckland to 180 cities in 72 countries around the world that use creativity to enable social, economic and cultural urban development. Launched by UNESCO, the cultural arms of the United Nations in 2004, the network covers seven creative fields: Crafts and Folk Arts, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts and Music. Auckland is one of 31 UNESCO Cities of Music, and New Zealand’s second Creative City, alongside Dunedin (Literature).
The designation acknowledges the city’s long and rich musical history and its commitment to being a music-friendly city, promoting local creativity, and strengthening Aucklanders’ participation in cultural life.
Industry representatives, industry bodies and the Auckland Council group are working together to solve challenges and maximise opportunities for the region’s music industry and culture, guided by the Auckland Music Strategy Te Rautaki Puoro o Tāmaki Makaurau 2018 — 2021.
