Laura Fergusson Trust Incorporated - LFT Auckland

Laura Fergusson Trust Incorporated - LFT Auckland Laura Fergusson Trust (LFT) has deep roots in care, rehabilitation, advocacy, and housing for physically disabled people in Auckland and Northland.

Today, we stand as the voice of physically disabled people — vibrant, equal, and full of life. Our founders’ vision was to assist and encourage disabled people towards achieving their full potential and independence in daily living. For over 50 years this vision was realised through many evolutions in society, policy, medical knowledge, the growing use of technology and increasing understanding of

disability. The way we look at disability in New Zealand has also changed significantly over this time. New Zealand’s disability sector is undergoing a once-in-a-generation shift, driven by new policy underpinned by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), Te Tiriti o Waitangi and ensuring disabled people are involved in decision-making that impacts them. To secure a strong financial future for the Trust, we must adapt to support disabled people in a way that reflects this sector transformation. This includes transforming LFT Auckland to a social investment agency model, led by people with lived experience of disability. We will continue to build on our founders’ legacy through sustainable initiatives that remove barriers and create new opportunities for disabled people. Our vision is an equitable society for disabled New Zealanders.

Now that we’re a Community Housing Provider (CHP), we’ve shifted up a gear. Exploratory work is underway across six potential sites in South and East Auckland.
We’ve scratched the pad with early design thinking for accessible, purpose-built housing that will enable physically disabled people to live vibrant and equal lives.
For a sneak peek about the kind of thing we’re driving at see below. We’re busy getting ahead of the game and ready to move at pace when we get the full green light.

Over the past year, we’ve partnered with ROPE NEURO REHABILITATION LIMITED and ABI Rehabilitation New Zealand to deliver a gym programme designed for people with physical disabilities. The impact has been powerful.

Participants have seen improvements in strength, mobility, and confidence, along with greater motivation and social connection.

“The progress is small, but the impact is so big for us.”

Access to specialist equipment and a supportive environment has been key, with quality of life data also showing positive change.

Looking ahead to 2026, we’re currently reviewing the programme and look forward to restarting soon so more people can benefit.

It was great to be out in the community last week attending Show Your Ability, New Zealand’s leading annual disability equipment expo.

It was fantastic to connect with suppliers, explore new innovations in equipment and assistive technology, and see the continued advancement of solutions that support independence for people with physical disabilities.

For us at Laura Fergusson Trust, opportunities like this are invaluable. Staying connected with the sector and learning about emerging technology helps inform the work we are doing — from rehabilitation and housing to community participation — and will feed into a number of our future workstreams.

Great to see so many organisations, suppliers, and advocates coming together with a shared focus: enabling people with physical disabilities to live independently, participate fully in their communities, and thrive.

Exciting news! 🏡✨

The Laura Fergusson Trust is now officially registered as a Community Housing Provider (CHP) — a significant milestone in our journey.

Our mission is to set the standard for a future where physically disabled people thrive as equal, visible and valued citizens. Housing is a key area of impact for us — creating accessible, future-fit options that go beyond minimum standards.

We believe accessible housing is fundamental to independence, choice and quality of life. Our vision is for every person with a physical disability to have access to a home that truly supports their needs.

Thank you for backing our work. Together, we’re turning vision into action.

This redesignation feels like a natural next step for the School. The new name and status reflect the range of work happening across the faculty and the programmes they offer. It also highlights the steady growth in teaching and research across applied exercise and sport sciences, clinical exercise physiology and physiotherapy, areas that are clearly continuing to evolve and expand.

For us at Laura Fergusson Trust, it reinforced the importance of collaboration. Working alongside tertiary partners creates exciting opportunities for shared research, student engagement, and innovation that strengthens rehabilitation pathways for people living with physical disability.

We look forward to continuing to build this relationship and exploring what we can achieve together.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming our members through our new Transitional Home.

Our members are at the heart of . Their voices, lived experience, advocacy, and ongoing support have shaped who we are — and who we are becoming.

It was a privilege to open our doors, show them through the space, and showcase what this home represents: safe, warm, accessible transitional accommodation designed to support recovery, independence, and dignity.

We value their insights, their encouragement, and their belief in our mission. Opportunities like this remind us that rebuilding isn’t just about bricks and mortar — it’s about community.

Thank you to everyone who came through. Your support strengthens our resolve to continue creating housing solutions that truly work for physically disabled people.
