Last weekend our Wellington Branch co hosted the Kaitoke Regional Park Tamariki Ranger Day! - the "junior rangers" had to complete a series of activities to earn their own Tamariki Ranger Badge - the activities included shelter building, fire safety, marshmellow tasting and eel feeding !

The youth also learned about how Greater Wellington’s park rangers care for nature and the community in Kaitoke.

It was a great community day out !, thanks to our students, local operations committee and instructors for their support of this worthwhile event.

Shout out to Kane, for the many hats he wears - legend

Follwing on from the post ealrier in the week with the post from , here's another little bit about what I get up to.

Volunteer Profile
The impact our volunteers have collectively across the country is clear to see. But that bigger picture is made up of thousands of individual personal experiences and emotions, that can often go unshared. This edition, we would like to introduce you to Kane Turner.

Who am I? I am Kane Turner, currently based on the sunny Whangaparaoa Peninsula, just north of Auckland city.
I have been involved with Land Search and Rescue New Zealand for almost 28 years, from being a training tutor and operational team member with both Auckland Land Search and Rescue and more recently Northland Land Search and Rescue. I was in the rope rescue team for both organisations, and with Northland I was Cave and Rope rescue, as well as a Team Leader and First Responder.
I am also currently involved with Task Force Kiwi, Response teams in Auckland, and our local Coastguard all in my spare time.
Outside of search and rescue, my partner and I formed and run KT Services - a home-based online store and training provider of safety and first aid courses.
We provide a discount to Land Search and Rescue volunteers on the products we sell which include special request items and bespoke kits we make for things like hunting, chainsaw work, and rescue teams, and more “off the shelf” kits for workplaces and vehicles. Our main focus however is on bespoke training throughout New Zealand, which is now growing into the Pacific.

This weekend, I had the privilege of spending time with the incredible instructors, students, and parents at the Auckland and Waikato YSAR exercise in the Kaimai Ranges. It’s not often I get the chance to step away from the office and immerse myself in the field, and after this experience, I’m committed to changing that next year.

What I witnessed was nothing short of inspiring. These young people are intelligent, articulate, and supremely confident—true innovators and critical thinkers who combine mental agility with physical fitness. They are already displaying exceptional capability in search and rescue (SAR) and emergency management (EM), demonstrating technical wizardry with GIS, intelligence gathering, planning, and flawless ex*****on.

To the parents and instructors who have nurtured this talent and dedication: thank you. Your commitment and support make a remarkable difference, ensuring that the next generation of responders is well-prepared and deeply motivated.

Stepping into their world—fully unplugged—reminded me why I do what I do. I left feeling more assured than ever that our future is in very capable hands. I truly have the best job in the world, and I’m looking forward to spending more time with these promising young leaders in the coming year.

A YSAR student - making history - Cape To Cape
Our very own YSAR Tauranga Olly Dow with local teammates William Dunn and Thomas Winter have started their 3 week human-powered journey across the widest part of New Zealand, East Cape to Cape Egmont, a route of over 800km. The boys will be the first people to complete the route.

They are fundraising for the Child Cancer Foundation, a crucial charity among today's society. They help families who drop everything to support their sick Tamariki. Their goal is to raise 50k for them.

Please support them by contributing to their give a little page.
