This weekend, I had the privilege of spending time with the incredible instructors, students, and parents at the Auckland and Waikato YSAR exercise in the Kaimai Ranges. It’s not often I get the chance to step away from the office and immerse myself in the field, and after this experience, I’m committed to changing that next year.
What I witnessed was nothing short of inspiring. These young people are intelligent, articulate, and supremely confident—true innovators and critical thinkers who combine mental agility with physical fitness. They are already displaying exceptional capability in search and rescue (SAR) and emergency management (EM), demonstrating technical wizardry with GIS, intelligence gathering, planning, and flawless ex*****on.
To the parents and instructors who have nurtured this talent and dedication: thank you. Your commitment and support make a remarkable difference, ensuring that the next generation of responders is well-prepared and deeply motivated.
Stepping into their world—fully unplugged—reminded me why I do what I do. I left feeling more assured than ever that our future is in very capable hands. I truly have the best job in the world, and I’m looking forward to spending more time with these promising young leaders in the coming year.
