We're a ringing society based at St Matthew-in-the-City in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa (Auckland, New Zealand). Practice is on a Tuesday night (7.30-9.15) and service ringing is on a Sunday morning (9.15-10.00). From time to time we have open days where the public are able to come in and take a look at the bells, and to learn more about the bells. We love talking to people about bells and showing th

em. We are all really friendly and would love to see you come in and visit us on one of our open days.

Aroha mai for the accidental cross post about knitting. Scott's knitting group is still meeting on Sunday, and the rest of you are welcome - after you've finished service ringing! 🧶🔔💕

Scott has been rather slack at remembering to post, but we've been very busy this month! We've had a lovely range of visitors (you're always welcome!) and have seen all the weather: sunny weather to punish those back at work & school, and rainy weather to punish those who aren't or who've retired. This weekend has also brought some deathly storms, so our thoughts with those affected.

We've had a busy start to the year & rung all the things too: rounds, called changes, plain hunt, Plain Bob, Grandsire, Stedman, Reverse Canterbury, Canterbury Place, St Simon's Bob; and have rung on 6 and 8. I'm feeling tired just thinking about it 😅

Happy New Year e te whānau!

We successfully rang the new year transition with 8 ringers and various supporters. We rang Plain Hunt 5, Grandsire Doubles & Plain Bob Doubles on the front 6 & Stedman Doubles in the back 6, rounds & called changes before & after midnight, and some diminishing rounds to mark the year change.

A video will go up on our youtube channel once Scott has had some sleep 💕

Tonight we ring out the old year & ring in the new one, with a short pause in the middle so our merry bellringers can watch the fireworks from the roof.

Scott & Adrian have been busy this week adding additional lighting above the bells (which is unelectrified) so we can make safer progress up to the roof. This was made harder by the weather & the fact Scott gets vertigo & does not like heights!

🔔 No practice tonight! 🔔

You’ve all rung brilliantly over the past week — four days of Christmas ringing is no small feat — so you’ve earned a night off … at least from hauling ropes! 💪
(Perfect excuse to sit down with Methodology and give your brain a workout instead.)

If you’re looking ahead to 2026, some good things to focus on:
🔔 St Simon’s group, plus Reverse Canterbury (same calls, different feel)
🔔 Stedman - doubles if you're new to it, the calls for triples if you're not
🔔 Little Bob Minor — including more spliced with Plain Bob Minor
⭐ Stretch goal: Cambridge Surprise Minor

A few dates to note:
🎆 New Year’s Eve ringing: from 11pm — If you’re driving, come a bit earlier to beat the traffic.
🔔 Sunday ringing: Sunday 4 January
🗓 Practice resumes next week — which conveniently lands just after the 12th Day of Christmas (5 January)

Enjoy the breather, enjoy the season, and huge thanks again for all the ringing this Christmas 🎄✨
