The Darién Gap is one of the world’s most important migration routes, stretching over 100 kilometer of dense and roadless jungle connecting Colombia and Panama. This treacherous land route marks a critical passage for those seeking to migrate from South America to the United States.

While the majority of people crossing the Darién in 2024 were Venezuelans, migrants navigating the jungle come from over 100 different nationalities and are fleeing their homelands to seek better living conditions in the United States.

Following a variety of individuals in their journey through the gap, ‘Paths of Desperate Hope’ by Federico Ríos, The New York Times, was awarded a Long-term projects award in the 2025 World Press Photo Contest.

Seen here, an image from ‘Brazil’s Worst-Ever Floods’ by Amanda Maciel Perobelli, awarded in the 2025 World Press Photo Contest, for documenting the record-breaking floods in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

The floods caused widespread environmental devastation, the displacement of over 600,000 residents, and the death of 183 people.

This photo was talked about during our recent interview on Breakfast TV. It looks like the surfer is standing on a cloud!

It is Brazil's Gabriel Medina bursting out triumphantly from a large wave in the fifth heat of round three of men’s surfing, during the 2024 Olympic Games. Teahupo’o, Tahiti, French Polynesia, 29 July 2024.
