We are a union dedicated to protecting, supporting, and advancing the rights of RMOs across New Zealand. We advocate for safer working conditions, fair pay, and better training opportunities for doctors at every stage of their journey. Since 1985, the RDA has protected and advanced the interests of RMOs through collective bargaining, fearless advocacy, and strategic engagement at all levels of the health system. The RDA proudly represents all Resident Medical Officers, including: Registrars, House Officers, Trainee Interns, Clinical Students, GPEP Trainees and Dental House Surgeons.

NZRDA is urging the public to stay vigilant following today’s announcement that Physician Associates are now officially a regulated healthcare workforce in Aotearoa New Zealand.

“Physician Associates are not doctors,” said Dr Deborah Powell, National Secretary of the NZRDA. “They do not have medical degrees, they have not been to medical school, and they do not have the same training as a doctor. It is crucial that patients and their whānau know the difference.”

SECA Update: Protected Teaching Time

All house officers get a minimum of 3 hours of protected teaching time per week and all other RMOs get a minimum of 4 hours per week. (Clause 26.0). Steps must be taken by the employer to ensure this time is adequately protected including:

- Identifying the SMO in charge of teaching to RMOs and NZRDA
- Teaching time being rostered within ordinary hours
- Those working with RMOs being aware of the timing of protected teaching time, and managing potential calls to RMOs accordingly
- An appropriately qualified medical practitioner being responsible to take and act on calls so interruptions and work remaining for the RMOs is minimised
- An annual audit of the delivery of teaching. (Schedule 3)

The Employment Leave Act 2026 has now passed into law and will replace the Holidays Act 2003. Although not due to take effect until August 2028, with an additional year to update leave clauses in employment agreements, the RDA have put together a summary of the main changes.

Senior registrars on relief who are at the top of the salary scale are to be paid an additional annual allowance on top of their salary of $10,000 for those on year 8 category A or year 9 Category B and $15,000 for those is on year 9 Category A, for the time spent on relief.
