The Luxon Government's attack on environmental protection with the fast-track bill is a war on nature which undermines democracy and Te Tiriti. Grab a friend and join the march!

Posted • .swarbrick You *wood* not believe it. After more than a decade of fighting to reinstate urban tree protection, along with our community and environmental campaigners have got it done through an Amendment to the Natural and Built Environment Bill.

The former National/Act Government axed protections, preventing Council creating general rules to protect classes of trees such as pōhutukawa, meaning they had to undertake an arduous and expensive process (which we also found they on the whole refused to do) to individually identify and list specific trees one by one. It led to the decimation of our urban tree canopy, particularly in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, which in turn hurt carbon sequestration and increased the heat island effect (both accelerating climate change), as well as making us all the more vulnerable to flooding and slips.

Genuine climate action is both mitigation and adaptation. We can’t bank on imaginary technologies to save us; we can and must protect our natural environment like our lives rely on it, which also happens to make life in our cities all the more bloody beautiful!

Let this now be a precedent - and fair warning - to cowboy ‘arborists’ who think there will not be consequences, or who think it will fall onto the developer.

In just one month these magnificent trees in front of Avondale Primary transform into a site of learning and abseiling by Mana Rakau during the Whau Arts Festival. Do your part to ensure Auckland Council continues to support our local communities with access to services that nurture wellbeing and Tāmaki Makaurau’s unique cultural identity. Nau mai, haere mai. Mana Rākau is back at court to tautoko our last group of tree protectors, Zane, Hannah, Trav simply for doing what our government is not brave enough to do - stand up for our environment, it’s creatures, healthy communities and a liveable planet.

Remember this?
“South Auckland’s Ardmore Airport has reorganised a massive expansion around a grove of native trees rather than pulling them down.

The grove of some 60 kahikatea trees was due to be removed in November 2021 when activist group Mana Rākau got involved.

In response, airport chief executive officer Dave Marcellus agreed to halt felling and to take another look at the plans.”

Kudos to the CEO pausing and having a kōrero with Zane , and despite the financial cost of the redesign, acknowledging the value of these native trees to the community and the environment and doing anyway - because it’s the right thing to do!

Tree protection activists Mana Rākau say it's a prime example of how developers and activists can work together to save important trees.
