Te Piringatahi O Te Maungaarongo Marae

Te Piringatahi O Te Maungaarongo Marae Te Piringatahi O Te Maungaarongo Marae is an Auckland based Marae affiliated with the Northern Iwi - Ngapuhi. Our Marae Kawa is Ngapuhi.

Every Marae has its own tikanga and kawa (customs and rules). Ko Te Waonui-a-Tiriwa ngā pae maunga,
Ko Waitematā te moana,
Ko Tiriwa te whenua,
Ko Ngāti Whātua, ko Ngāpuhi, ko Kawerau-Ā-Maki ngā whanaunga,
Ko Te Hau Moana te whare tūpuna,
Ko Kupe rāua ko Puhi-Kai-Ariki ngā amo,
Ko Te Hau Ora te wharekai,
Ko Te Kōhanga Reo ō Maungaarongo te whare mokopuna,
Ko Te Piringatahi o te Maungaarongo te wah

aroa ki te Whare Tapu ō Ngāpuhi. Nestled within the Waitematā region located in West Harbour - West Auckland, Te Piringatahi o te Maungaarongo Marae is a community Marae for all of the community. The Tikanga and Kawa is recognised as Ngāpuhi. The Marae:
Te Piringatahi o te Maungaarongo means – “The bringing together of everyone in peace and unity”. The Wharenui:
The Wharenui is called 'Te Hau Moana' which means “The Wind of the Sea”, as the Marae is located near the West Haven Marina. It is believed that the aromas from this marina, are carried in the wind to the Marae and from this, the wharenui was named. The Wharekai:
The Wharekai is called 'Te Hau Ora' which means “The Wind of Life”. Waharoa Facing the North:
Our wharenui faces towards the North. Traditionally Marae face east, to embrace the welcoming light of each new day, but due to urban building regulations, we were forced to build our Marae facing the North. We believe this irregularity was a positive (sign) facing the North towards Te Rerenga Wairua (where spirits depart) allowing Te Piringatahi o te Maungaarongo to be the waharoa (gateway) to the North allowing us to send our whānau on their final journey to those departing the Earth.

Nga mihi nui o te wā e te whanau. These little harore(mushrooms) are tohu(signs) that our wao hua is becoming the connected system we had hoped for. After all the rain and sun over the last month the plants have shoot up but so have the weeds trying to smother them. If you and your tamariki would like to come and tautoko the mahi in our wao hua. Come along apopo from 9am. Hei apopo e te whanau.
