U3ATakapuna

U3ATakapuna U3A For those retired or about to retire, a place to pursue new or existing interests. All U3As are voluntary self-help organisations.

U3A is a voluntary educational co-operative movement which provides opportunities for people of mature age to engage in mentally stimulating activities. Each U3A is an autonomous unit which organises its programmes and affairs on an independent basis, but all adhere to five basic principles:-There is no distinction between teachers and those taught. Entry qualifications are not required, neither a

re examinations held, nor are diplomas or certificates of attainment issued. There is an annual subscription to cover running costs, but there are no course fees, and group conveners are U3A members who operate on a voluntary basis and receive no remuneration. U3A aims to harness the great reservoir of knowledge, skills and experience present among older people, to the mutual benefit of its members. Study Group meetings are held during the day at a convenient place in the locality, often in the private homes of the group members.

Guest Speaker: James Duncan, Tramway Project Manager, MOTAT
Topic: Trash to Treasure
The final part of the Auckland tram story…… one man’s efforts to try and save an Auckland tram right on the eve of the Auckland tramway system closing. His efforts stirred up other enthusiasts around the country which started a preservation movement in other New Zealand cities. Here in Auckland, it saw the formation of the museum we know today as MOTAT.
James grew up here in Auckland during the 1960s and 1970s when Auckland was served by a large and extensive electric trolley bus system. These vehicles fascinated him as a child and thus began a passion for electric street transport.
At age 15 he joined the Tramway Division at MOTAT and has now been an active volunteer member of the tramway for 49 years. Most of his working life was spent in retail, but in 2011 he was asked to take on managing the operation of the new tramway down in Wynyard Quarter.
Today, together with this role, and a full-time position at MOTAT looking after the infrastructure for the MOTAT Tramway, he says he is now like a pig in mud!

Guest Speaker: Wendy Hampton
Topic: Don’t leave a Mess, Leave a Legacy.
Wendy has more than 30 years’ experience as a lawyer primarily working in property matters including Residential and Commercial Conveyancing, Wills, Estates, Trusts, and Relationship Property Matters. For many years Wendy has had her own legal firm on Auckland’s North Shore but has recently sold her practice.
Over the years Wendy has gained extensive knowledge and experience in Estate Administration and is now travelling around New Zealand presenting talks on the importance of keeping a good record of your personal details in one place to ensure the administration of your estate can be carried out efficiently and cost effectively. In her experience Wendy has found that one of the reasons it can longer to finalise an estate is the time it takes for family to find the information needed about the deceased. If all the information was at the Executors’ fingertips from the start the estate administration process would be far smoother and much less distressing for grieving loved ones left behind.
To assist her clients with their estate planning Wendy created The Estate Planner Book which is an easy-to-follow record book which enables all the important information to be kept in one place. She has recently had the book published and made available to the public. Wendys talk will explain why you need to create a comprehensive record of your details and what information you should record.
The Estate Planner is by far the best legacy you can leave your loved ones.
