Pest Free Warkworth

Pest Free Warkworth Our aim is to make urban Warkworth pest free but we need your help! We have the generous support of many partners in enabling us to succeed.

New Zealand’s native flora and fauna are under continual pressure from introduced species with many on the brink of extinction. Our vision is:

”Mai i nga mahi iti ka p**a he hua nui“

“From small actions come big results”

Under the umbrella of Forest & Bird Warkworth Area Branch, Pest Free Warkworth invites you to be part of this community led initiative. We are targeting a minimum of one in f

ive households in urban Warkworth to be part of the Pest Free Warkworth project so that our community can become completely pest free by 2050. Especially thanks go to Predator Free NZ (grants and support), Auckland Council (grants and support), Forest and Bird (governance and fund management), Matakana ITM (donations of time and materials), plus many other local community groups and volunteers who make this all possible. The vegetation growth recently has been phenomenal! Now is a good time to clear around your traps. If you have a hard time finding them, chances are the pests do too!

We spent some time auditing the Cement Works trapline the other day — clearing back vegetation around the traps and re-marking them so they’re much easier to find on future checks.

All the DOC200s were cleaned and recalibrated to make sure they’re firing at the correct weight and staying effective. It’s satisfying work getting everything back into good shape and knowing the line is working as it should.

Huge thanks to Sarah and her kids for coming along and lending a hand — awesome help and great to see the next generation involved 💚
And thanks to Blake for biking the line, fetching gear, and helping with TrapNZ — much appreciated!

Onward and upward for the trapline 👣🐀

🎄 Pre-Christmas Trap Maintenance on the Awa Mahurangi Line 🏞️

The other day I took the kayak out to check on some of the traps and the camera tucked away in the bush along the Mahurangi River. With the tide still in, I managed to service three of the eight AT220s—and they’ve been working hard! 💪
In just six months, those three traps alone have accounted for around 25 possums and over 100 rats. The camera footage showed the usual suspects: possums, rats… and one very busy trapper. 📸😄

I also pulled one of the AT220s out for a proper clean, unblocking the pump and giving it some well-earned maintenance after being out there for a long stretch.
Everything is now reset, refreshed, and ready for the pests’ Christmas dinner. 🎁🐀
Another small but important step toward protecting our native environment. 🌿

With all the recent publicity regarding water quality, it's good to know that by controlling pests, we're also helping to restore waterways:

Did you know that controlling pests like possums, rats, and feral pigs isn't just about saving our native forests—it's also vital for keeping our rivers clean?💧🌿

🪵 Possums and rodents damage native trees, seeds and seedlings, reducing the forest’s ability to hold soil in place.
🐗 Feral pigs dig up soil, spreading sediment into streams and rivers.
🌧️ When it rains, all that loose soil, droppings, and pollutants wash straight into our waterways—muddying rivers and harming the delicate ecosystems that live there.

By reducing pest numbers, we protect native vegetation and stop erosion at the source. That means cleaner, clearer water for fish, birds, bugs—and for us too! 🌊💚

🛠️ Pest control is water care.
🌱 Healthy forests = healthy water.

Let’s keep working together for thriving, pest-free habitats and sparkling waterways! ✨

On now. Great to get involved so we can observe long-term trends.

As we get stuck into the year it might be useful to get a reminder on how to set a Victor rat trap.
