Papawhakaritorito Charitable Trust

Papawhakaritorito Charitable Trust Papawhakaritorito is the name of the whānau food farm that Jessica and Jo live on. Papawhakaritorito refers to the place where the heart of the flaxbush sings.

Papawhakaritorito Charitable Trust was set up in 2021 with a focus on kaupapa Māori; research, education and land regeneration in relation to Indigenous seed, soil and food sovereignty. The small scale Hua Parakore food farm nourishes soil, food and whānau and provides an opportunity to live Indigenous Food Sovereignty through the Hua Parakore principles. The name was given in 2007 by the late Dr

Huirangi Waikerepuru a Māori language activist and trade unionist of Taranaki and Ngāpuhi whakapapa. It is a metaphor for whānau and collective wellbeing through holding fast to kaupapa Māori and ways of being on the land in an Indigenous way.

Wairakau - compost! Making a compost tea is a great way to make your compost go further, activating the microbiology by stirring a handful in a bucket and bringing dynamic energies to the water then applying it on the māra through a sprayer. huaparakore

We love zines because of the way they let us all express our individual creativity, and how small and easy they are to distribute.

To help us create a movement around the Mana Wāhine Declaration for Hineahuone, we were delighted to collaborate with to run a zine-making workshop in Te Whanganui-a-Tara recently.

We'd like to thank everyone who attended and who got inspired by the Declaration to put so much aroha into their zines.

As Anahera Gildea says, "There's nothing that others can do to gatekeep what you can say. They can be made by anybody."

If you feel inspired to join our movement to stand up for soil and seed, click the to sign the Declaration now.

He manaaki mā te tangata i te oneone, kaua hei kaiapo tonu i ngā hua o te oneone.

Ask not what the soil can do for us but what we can do for the soil…
This is one of the kaupapa we honour in the Hua Parakore principle of mana.

To prepare your soil for planting, it’s all about adding lots of nutrient-rich organic matter to encourage more bugs and microbes into your māra.

Some of the ways we do this without synthetic inputs at Papawhakaritorito is to…

Chop and drop existing crops, leaving them to rot on top of the soil.
Add compost one to two weeks before planting.
Put worm castings into each hole before transplanting seedlings or plants.

On World Biodiversity Day, we're celebrating the power of Indigenous women coming together to create and sign the Mana Wāhine Declaration for Hineahuone. This is a Māori women's declaration for soil and seed, created as part of our Seeding Hope research project. 🌱

The declaration was written in Aotearoa, in collaboration with Dr Vandana Shiva, who visited in 2024 to attend He Whenua Rongo - a symposium on kai (food), kākano (seed), and oneone (soil). Although Indigenous Peoples make up only six percent of the global population, we care for 80 percent of the world's biodiversity. That means we are in a unique situation to create a renewed future - one where we make a right return to nature and biodiversity can thrive.

If you support in this kaupapa, sign our Declaration today by heading to the 🔗 in the first comment 👇🏾.

We have more time to say no to biopiracy in Aotearoa! 👊🏾

The controversial Gene Technology Bill has stalled as the Coalition parties fail to agree on its final form.

That means we have a window to protect our soil, seeds and kai, and get our voices heard.

On World Food Day, we travelled to biodiversity farm Navdanya in India with a rōpū of hua parakore growers to meet Dr Vandana Shiva and her team, and present the Mana Wāhine Indigenous Women’s Declaration for Seed and Soil.

Together we made Herstory by signing this document in front of 300 people.

This document is an urgent call by Indigenous women to return to the ways of listening to, and being in inter-relationship with, Hineahuone and Papatūānuku - our soil and our earth.

This trip marked the start of a movement, which we’re calling you to now join.
